Ajinkya Rahane's private retreat in Igatpuri has been impossible to miss online this month, ever since the former India Test captain opened his family estate to guests through StayVista. The villa comes with an infinity pool, a cricket memorabilia room and views over a lake in the hills. But the attention on Rahane's home has quietly done something else. It has put Igatpuri itself back in the spotlight.

For years, this small hill town in Maharashtra's Nashik district has been the kind of place Mumbai and Pune residents kept to themselves. A cricketer choosing it for his own escape only confirms what regulars already knew.

Close Enough For A Short Trip, Far Enough To Feel Like An Escape

Igatpuri sits roughly 130 kilometres from Mumbai and is well connected by both road and rail, with its own railway station on the main line. That makes it realistic as a two-day trip without eating into a full weekend on travel. Tucked into the Western Ghats, the town sits noticeably cooler than the cities around it, with mist rolling over the hills for much of the year.

Waterfalls, Forts And A Lot Of Green

Igatpuri's biggest draw is its landscape. Vihigaon Falls, Camel Valley and Bhavali Dam are among the spots most visitors build a trip around, especially through the monsoon months when the waterfalls are at their fullest. History lovers can add Tringalwadi Fort to the itinerary, while trekkers often head towards Kalsubai Peak, the highest point in Maharashtra. None of it requires serious planning. A rented car or a short cab ride from the town centre covers most of it.

Igatpuri is also home to the Dhamma Giri Vipassana centre, one of the best-known meditation institutes in the country, which draws visitors from across the world looking to disconnect completely. It is a fitting detail for a town that keeps attracting people who want to switch off, cricketers included. Between the meditation centre, the quiet hillside resorts and the absence of any real nightlife, Igatpuri does not try to entertain you. It simply asks you to slow down.
