Months before Bigg Boss 20 has even aired an episode, the show has already handed its first big decision to the public. Rhiya Ahir, the 27-year-old model best known for standing in front of a police van during Mumbai's student protests, is competing against Punjabi actor Love Gill for a single spot in the house, and this time, viewers, not the makers, get to choose who walks in.

The format is called 'Fans Ka Faisla', and it isn't new. Salman Khan, who returns to host the show when it premieres on 6 September on Colors TV and JioHotstar, introduced the same concept last season, when content creator Mridul Tiwari won the public vote over Shehbaz Badesha. Mridul entered on premiere night; Shehbaz followed a few weeks later as a wildcard. This year, the audience decides between Ahir and Gill, and only one of them is guaranteed to make it inside.

The Girl Who Became A Face She Never Wanted To Be

Ahir's path to Bigg Boss started nowhere near a reality set. In July, a video of her intervening to stop a police van from detaining protestors during the Mumbai leg of the demonstrations over the alleged NEET paper leak went viral, turning her into an unlikely symbol of the movement. She has since built a following of over 3 lakh on Instagram, appeared in music videos including Dilbara, and founded Rhiyasat, a label working with Indian artisans on handcrafted apparel.

But speaking to Gulf News, Ahir was careful to draw a line between the moment and herself.

"I'm simply just the girl in front of the van," she said, insisting that the students, not her, deserved the spotlight.

That reluctance is precisely what has made her a talking point - a viral figure who keeps pointing the camera away from herself, now stepping, almost reluctantly, toward one of Indian television's biggest stages.

Love Gill's Case For The House

Gill brings a different kind of profile to the contest. Known for her role in the television show Tu Patang Main Dor and a string of Punjabi films including Haterz and Shakkar Paare, she has close to 6 lakh Instagram followers of her own. Reacting to the announcement, Gill called the format itself a gift, describing her shot at entry as the ultimate "Extra Jeevan Daan" for her journey before the season even begins.

How The Vote Works

Voting is open exclusively on the JioHotstar app and closes on 2 September at 11:59 pm - days before the season even starts. Whoever draws more votes will be welcomed into the house by Salman Khan himself during the Grand Premiere on 6 September.

A few things worth knowing before you vote:

• Voting is limited to the JioHotstar app; no phone or SMS option has been announced.
• The contest closes at 11:59 pm on 2 September, ahead of the 6 September premiere.
• The loser isn't necessarily out for good; last season's runner-up returned as a wildcard weeks later.
• The rest of the season's contestant list, reportedly including names like Nia Sharma, Karan Patel and Arjun Bijlani, is yet to be officially confirmed.

Bigg Boss has always sold itself on unpredictability, but this year it's testing something else, whether a moment of real-world courage translates into reality-television relevance, and whether audiences want to reward it. Rhiya Ahir didn't ask to become a symbol; Love Gill is chasing a stage she's long worked towards. Only one of them steps into the house on 6 September.
