Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan sent his resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday afternoon (25th July, 2026), ending weeks of speculation over his political future. He announced the decision himself, posting the letter on X just hours before a scheduled third round of talks between the Centre and student protesters.

It marks the first resignation under public pressure during Modi's tenure as prime minister.

Pradhan's exit had been one of the central demands of a youth-led movement calling itself the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical political campaign founded in May 2026 by digital strategist Abhijeet Dipke that grew into a genuine nationwide protest. Demonstrators have camped at Delhi's Jantar Mantar for over a month, demanding accountability over the 2026 NEET paper leak and irregularities in CBSE's on-screen marking process.

The agitation drew national attention after activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the protesters on an indefinite hunger strike. Clashes with police in the preceding days left both protesters and security personnel injured, and tear gas was used to disperse crowds gathered near Parliament.

In his resignation letter, Pradhan explained his reasoning directly.

"Considering the situation at Jantar Mantar and elsewhere in the country, and so that anti-national forces do not take advantage of the circumstances, national unity is maintained, no student's future gets entangled in legal complications, and our children can focus on their studies and building their careers, I have submitted my resignation to the Hon'ble Prime Minister," he wrote.

Who Is Dharmendra Pradhan

Pradhan, 57, was born on 26 June 1969 in Talcher, a small industrial town in Odisha's Angul district. His roots there run deep - the family still owns agricultural land in the region, and Talcher remains central to his political identity even decades after he moved to Delhi.

His father, Debendra Pradhan, was himself a Union Minister of State for Surface Transport and Agriculture under the Vajpayee government, and a practising doctor by training. He passed away in March 2025 at the age of 84, at his son's official residence in Delhi. His mother is Basanta Manjari Pradhan.

His Education And Early Student Politics

Pradhan completed his schooling in Talcher before enrolling at Talcher College for his undergraduate studies, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He went on to Utkal University in Bhubaneswar - one of eastern India's oldest central universities, established in 1943 - where he completed a Master of Arts in Anthropology in 1990.

It was during his college years, in 1983, that Pradhan first stepped into public life, joining the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) as a student activist at the age of 14. He rose to become president of the Talcher College Students' Union and later the national secretary of ABVP, before formally joining the BJP in 1998 - a trajectory that took him from campus politics to the Union Cabinet over the following two decades.

A Career Spanning Energy, Skills And Education

Pradhan was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly from Pallahara in 2000, and entered the Lok Sabha for the first time in 2004 from Deogarh. He later served two terms in the Rajya Sabha, representing Bihar and then Madhya Pradesh.

His most prominent early portfolio came in 2014, when he was made Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas - a position he went on to hold for seven years, making him the longest-serving minister in that role. During this period, he was closely associated with the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the scheme that provided free LPG connections to over 90 million households. He also held additional charge of the Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry from 2017, and briefly led the Ministry of Steel.

Pradhan took over as Union Education Minister in July 2021 and was retained in the post after winning the 2024 general election from Sambalpur, Odisha. As Education Minister, he became the face of implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, describing it at a 2025 event as central to the government's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

Family Life Away From Politics

Pradhan married Mridula Thakur Pradhan on 12 September 1998. She is self-employed and serves as Managing Trustee of the Vikash Foundation Trust, a charitable organisation involved in social welfare work. The couple have two children, son Nishant and daughter Naimisha.

According to his 2024 election affidavit, Pradhan's declared assets stood at close to ₹7 crore, including agricultural and residential property in Odisha and an apartment in Ghaziabad.
