"Smile Pinki" Brings A Smile On Villagers' Faces

When Megan Mylan's film "Smile Pinky" bagged an Oscar for best short documentary in the USA, it was a blessed moment for the residents of Dabai of Uttar Pradesh. They had been huddling in front of the television to check whether the sad saga of an Indian girl touches the hearts of Oscar judging Committee.

"Smile Pinky" is the story of a six-year old girl with cleft lips. She becomes an outcast in her society due to the lip deformity. The 39 minutes documentary show, how she had to undergo a corrective surgery to lead a normal childhood.

"Smile Pinky" is one of the four films nominated for best short documentary at the famed Academy Awards. The villagers in Dabai believe that this award will raise the popularity of the village and will bring them progress.
