Navratri 2026: Vastu Consultant Gauri Jain Shares 9 Vastu Tips To Prepare Your Home Before Ghatasthapana
Navratri 2026 marks nine days of devotion to Goddess Durga, with devotees welcoming the divine feminine energy into their homes through prayers, rituals and offerings. The festival begins with Ghatasthapana, a significant ritual that marks the invocation of Goddess Durga and involves establishing a sacred pot, or kalash, in the puja area. This year, preparing the home before this ritual offers an opportunity to create a clean, peaceful and welcoming space for the festivities.
Gauri Jain, a Vastu consultant, astrologer and numerologist believes that simple practices involving cleanliness, lighting, organisation and positive intentions can help create a harmonious atmosphere for Navratri 2026. So, here are 9 Vastu tips to prepare your home before Ghatasthapana.
1. Clean Every Corner Of Your Home
Before Ghatasthapana, give your home a thorough cleaning. Pay attention not only to visible areas but also to corners, cupboards, shelves, windows and spaces that are often neglected. Special attention should be given to the North-East direction, also known as the Ishan Kon, and the puja area. A clean and organised home helps create a peaceful environment for prayers and celebrations.
2. Prepare And Decorate The Main Entrance
Clean the main entrance, including the door, door frame, handles and surrounding areas. Remove dust, cobwebs, unnecessary objects and footwear clutter. Ensure that the entrance is well-lit, welcoming and free from obstructions. You can decorate it with fresh flowers, a traditional toran or a rangoli to give your home a festive appearance.
3. Keep The Ishan Kon Clean And Clutter-Free
The North-East corner is considered spiritually significant in Vastu Shastra and is associated with peace, clarity and spiritual growth. Before Ghatasthapana, clean this area thoroughly and keep it light, open and organised. You may place a clean diya, a small copper vessel filled with fresh water or a sacred symbol such as Om or Swastik. Ensure that the area remains peaceful and well-ventilated.
4. Decorate The Puja Space With Fresh Flowers
Fresh flowers can add colour, fragrance and a festive touch to your puja area. Choose vibrant blooms and arrange them neatly around the altar. Remove wilted or dried flowers regularly to maintain cleanliness. Keeping the puja space fresh and organised can make your daily prayers during Navratri more pleasant and meaningful.
5. Choose A Safe Place For The Akhand Jyoti
If you are observing the tradition of keeping an Akhand Jyoti during Navratri, choose a clean, stable and peaceful place near your puja or Ghatasthapana setup. Keep the diya away from curtains, papers, fans, air-conditioning vents and other flammable materials. Ensure that it is positioned securely and can be attended to safely throughout the day and night. The Akhand Jyoti symbolises devotion, awareness and the continuous presence of divine light during the festival.
6. Remove Stagnant Water From The House
Before Ghatasthapana, check your home for unnecessary stagnant or dirty water. Empty unused buckets, flower vases, trays, coolers and other containers where water may have accumulated. Check for leaking taps, dripping pipes, clogged drains and water collecting in balconies. Maintaining clean and hygienic water conditions helps keep your surroundings fresh and prevents the accumulation of neglected water.
7. Remove Broken And Unused Items
Take time to identify broken, damaged and unused items that have accumulated in your home. Clear unnecessary clutter and ensure that sacred objects in the puja area are clean and in good condition. Navratri represents Shakti, renewal and fresh beginnings. Organising your surroundings and letting go of items you no longer need can help create a more peaceful and comfortable living environment.
8. Allow Natural Light And Fresh Air Into Your Home
Open your windows and doors for some time before Ghatasthapana to allow fresh air and natural light to circulate. Clean the windows, open heavy curtains and keep the puja and living areas bright and well-ventilated. Pay special attention to dark corners and closed spaces. From a Vastu perspective, light and ventilation contribute to an uplifting atmosphere and make the home feel fresh and welcoming.
9. Begin Navratri 2026 With A Positive Sankalp
Along with physical preparations, take a few moments to prepare yourself spiritually. Make a positive sankalp, or intention, for the nine days of Navratri. Pray for peace, strength, wisdom, health, harmony and the well-being of your family. Try to let go of unnecessary worries, arguments and negativity, and begin the festival with gratitude and devotion. Let Ghatasthapana mark not just the beginning of a ritual, but also an opportunity for inner reflection and renewal.
Welcome Navratri 2026 With Devotion And Positive Intentions
This Navratri 2026, preparing your home for Ghatasthapana is about more than cleaning and decorating. It is also an opportunity to create an environment that encourages peace, devotion and togetherness. By following these Vastu suggestions, you can make your home feel more welcoming as you begin the nine days of worship. Most importantly, let your preparations reflect faith, gratitude and a sincere intention to invite positivity into your home and life throughout Navratri.
