Assam, the land of art, culture and craft is going to celebrate its new year. Bihu, the Assamese term for New Year is going to be celebrated on 14th April this 2012. Bihu is a festival of colours and is celebrated with great enthusiasm every year. It is a festival which is celebrated according to the life cycle of the paddy crop.
Three parts of Bihu is celebrated every year, depending on the harvesting. Basically, it falls based on the agriculture circle. As a part of their culture, Assamese people decorate their houses with beautiful hand crafts to celebrate the harvest festival.

Traditional decor ideas for Bihu:
Lamps: Decorate with lamps to spread the light of happiness all around the house. Crafted cloth lamps are great for setting the eco-friendly theme. You can craft them by painting. If you want to go traditional, try using diyas. Use clay lamps. You can even decorate them by colouring the diyas. To create an ambiance of a paddy field, hang traditional lanterns outside the entrance.
Wall hangings: As Assam is known for its art and crafts, make cultural wall hangings for decorating the house for Bihu. Embroidery wall hangings can add spark to your decorations. If you have time, weave the traditional Assamese prints depicting harvesting scenes.
Assam silk/cotton curtains: Silk and cotton are widely used in north-eastern states. Why not use these fabrics for decorating your house? For Bihu, have special curtains of these fabrics. Even if you have mud houses, cut the curtains according to the length and breath of the windows.
Flowers: Bihu is a harvest festival. It would be incomplete without flowers. Opt for bright flowers especially yellow ones. Decorate the entrance with floral rangoli.
