The myth of the Onam festival says that in ancient times Vishnu in the guise of a little boy asked the prosperous King Bali for 3 steps of land. The generous king agreed with a touch of humour. But Vishu grew to gigantic proportions and placed one foot on the earth, the other on the sky and for the third Bali offered his head. • The most important home decor theme for Onam is flowers. Being a harvest festival with a divine significance fresh flowers have an inherent connection with it.

• The Pookalam or floral rangoli designs outside the house are a whole chapter by themselves because there are so many different designs. Over and above Pookalam, flowers can be used in the traditional home decor in which ever way you please.

• Use garlands of marigolds and roses to adorn the bare walls. Wrapping garlands around the pillars in your house is also a great home decor idea. You could also use them to decorate large framed pictures of gods and family elders who have passed away.

• Keep bowls full of sweet smelling jasmines in your living room and bed room. Keep water bowls with floating rose petals as centerpieces. Decorate the dining table with bunches of sunflowers in a vase. They will all work well.
