Diwali 2021: Lantern Decorating Tips While Celebrating The Festival Of Light

Diwali is the festival of lights and while it used to be only the natural light of oil lamps earlier, now it includes the artificial lights of lanterns too. Decorating with lanterns is a time tested method of Diwali decorations. Earlier these lanterns would be glass lanterns with candles inside them and now we have paper lanterns that are disposable. You could actually bring in a beautiful blend of the traditional and contemporary by mixing and matching various kinds of hanging lanterns.
To make this Diwali special you could try any of the following ideas for decorating with lanterns.
Tips For Decorating With Lanterns:
- The Old World Charm: As stated above you can use different types of lanterns for Diwali decorations. In that case, rediscovering the nostalgia of the old world charm is a great idea. You could use colourful stained glass lanterns on the outside of your house. Now glass lanterns are usually lit manually with candles. If you want it really authentic then stick to it. You can use electronically lit bulb lanterns to make matters simpler.
- Making Patterns: They say that colours speak; lanterns could speak as well if you make patterns out of them. Hanging lanterns that form shapes and patterns is a great idea for festival decorations. You could form a lamp or a huge lantern or any other interesting shape with it.
- Make it Three Dimensional: Is it possible to give your Diwali decorations a 3 D effect? Yes, it is. If you are decorating with lanterns of different sizes and hang them from varying heights then it will give the whole thing a three-dimensional effect. Suppose you use all lanterns of square shape and hang them alternatively higher and lower from the ceiling then it would give the illusion of stairs when it is all lit up.
- Playing With Shapes: If you are using only paper lanterns then you could experiment with various shapes. Round, square, vertically rectangular or abstract are all available in your kitty. However, there are some shapes that are traditionally not meant for Diwali. The star shape for example is more symbolic of Christmas and new year so you can hold on to it for a couple of months until Santa Claus arrives.
- Cane Lanterns: They are not 'use and throw' like the paper lanterns nor are they difficult to maintain like the glass lanterns. Cane lanterns thus make a very convenient choice. You can use these decorative lanterns for this Diwali and save them for the next Diwali or any of the upcoming festivals like Christmas or Thanksgiving.
- Other Choices: There are many other choices if you really want to experiment. You have the earthen lanterns that look very ethnic or the plastic ones that look funky. There are metal lanterns that are more durable but on the expensive side. So go ahead and take your pick.
Decorating with lanterns can be a really creative experience so you should really opt for it.
