What Happens When You Eat Too Much Of Honey?
Listed in this article are the side effects of consuming excess honey. Check them out.
We all know that consuming honey has its own positive effects on our health. It has been used as a natural remedy for thousands of years.
But what happens when you consume too much of it? You guessed it right! It is a well-known fact that consuming too much of anything is bad and honey is no exception.
Come on readers, let us explore some of the adverse effects of consuming too much of honey on our human system.
Now let us see some of the facts about honey.
- One teaspoon of honey contains 5.8 grams of carbohydrates.
- In honey, all the carbohydrates are in the form of sugar.
- In comparison to table sugar per serving, honey's carbohydrates and calorie content are large.
Having listed out these facts, it is clearly visible that honey and table sugar have more or less the same effects on our body.
Increases Blood Sugar Level:
Since honey has large amounts of carbohydrates, honey tends to raise the blood sugar level.
In a healthy person, the production of insulin counteracts the raise in the sugar level but for a diabetic person, one can notice abnormal raise in its level. Honey, is therefore, a strict no-no for a person who suffers from diabetes.
Dental Problem:
According to USDA National Nutrient Database, about 82 percent of honey is comprised of sugar and it can easily promote tooth decay. Though honey has natural sugars as its components, it can easily stick to the various parts of your mouth, especially the teeth because of its high viscosity.
Honey helps bacteria in the mouth to create acid which in turn leads to the erosion of the tooth enamel, thus promoting tooth decay. So it is always better to use honey sparingly in your diet.
Weight Gain:
Honey promotes unwanted weight gain. The culprit is the fructose present in this sugary stuff. Too much of it can lead to obesity and related health problems because of its high sugar content. Though natural, its high concentration of sugar can affect our heart.
Affects Gastrointestinal Tract:
Honey being slightly acidic can erode the linings of the stomach, oesophagus and intestines, thus leading to the malfunctioning of the gastrointestinal tract, if consumed for a long period of time. This can also lead to a disease called acid reflux.
Constipation And Stomach Trouble:
Constipation is another health issue that arises on consuming too much of honey. High concentration of fructose is again the reason for this. Other side effects are bloating and diarrhoea. Diarrhoea may be the result of the inability of the stomach to digest the sugars in honey.
Low Blood Pressure:
Honey has the necessary ingredients to lower the blood pressure if taken in plenty. So, there is always a risk for people with low blood pressure having too much of honey, as it gets further reduced, thus leading to serious malfunctioning of the heart. It is always advised to consult a good physician on the quantity of intake of honey.
Recommended Dosage Of Honey:
We might now raise the question about the optimal level of intake of honey. As we have already seen, the ill effect of large quantities of honey on our system is huge. As per known resources, approximately 10 teaspoon, i.e., 50 ml of honey is the recommended dosage per day.
But this dosage cannot be guaranteed, as the optimal level of intake largely depends on the person's diet and lifestyle. An active person may need more quantities of sugar than a sedentary one. Thus the recommended dosage may vary.
