A system of hormones and prostaglandins are used by the human body to regulate the water levels. Water retention can occur due to several reasons and in different parts of the body.

1. Consuming Too Much Sodium:

2. Processed Foods:
Processed foods are known to contain a lot of sugar and sodium. These two substances are known to be the main reasons that cause edema or fluid retention. This is one of the main causes of fluid retention.
3. Dehydration:
Not drinking enough water during the day can result in dehydration. Dehydration can make the body retain more water in order to sustain through. Hence this can lead to the swelling of the tissues. This is one of the top causes of fluid retention in the body.
4. Vitamin B6 Deficiency:
Lack of vitamin B6 can also lead to water retention. Hence you need to make sure to optimize its levels. The best sources of vitamin B6 are tuna, sunflower seeds, potatoes, pistachios, bananas or chicken.
5. Magnesium Deficiency:
Magnesium is known to be one of the most important minerals for our health. Taking optimum amounts of magnesium helps in preventing fluid retention. Magnesium can be found in foods like nuts, dried fruits, avocado, whole grains and spinach.
6. Potassium Deficiency:
Lack of potassium in the body can lead to improper functioning of the organs, fluid imbalance and water retention. This is because this mineral is responsible for regulating the water balance in the body.
7. Pregnancy:
The weight of the uterus on the major veins can cause a build up of fluid in the body during pregnancy. This is not a big problem to be worried about, as the matter will be resolved after pregnancy. This is one of the main causes of fluid retention.
8. Physical Inactivity:
Exercise helps the leg veins to return blood to the heart. If the blood does not travel fast enough, then it begins to accumulate in the legs. Hence, exercise is necessary to stimulate the circulatory system and prevent water retention.
