When you reach out for your toothbrush early in the morning after you wake up or just before you go to bed at night, hardly do you realise that it could be full of germs. Used toothbrushes contain oral microbial organisms, viruses and bacteria that can cause infections.
A dirty brush has many disgusting germs which could be harmful, but you will find many ways to clean your toothbrush and keep it free from germs. It is essential to understand that your hands must be washed with soap and hot water before a brush is handled. In addition, a toothbrush should be washed in running warm water for several seconds after and before every use.
Among the best methods to maintain a germ-free brush is to combine one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide with one cup of water and swish the brush around into the mixture for at least 30 seconds before using. Then the brush may be rinsed in hot water. Mouthwash that contains alcohol may be used instead of hydrogen peroxide.
One other good way to clean a brush is to soak it. An excellent way is to soak a toothbrush in undiluted vinegar. The vinegar will kill majority of the germs and bacteria. Boiling water may also be used for cleaning a toothbrush. A very easy way to do is to put a toothbrush in a cup of boiling water. For optimum results the brush must be left in the cup for three to five minutes.
Bleach is another very efficient way to clean a toothbrush. The toothbrush should be stirred around in the bleach mixture for about 30 seconds and after that rinsed thoroughly before being used.
Washing a brush periodically in the dishwasher is another excellent technique. It might seem a little odd, but it will deep clean the brush and rid it of undesirable germs and bacteria. Make sure that the brush is placed on the top rack to prevent it from melting from the heat. Run the dishwasher through its regular cycle and use dishwasher detergent.
There are various effective ways to clean a brush, but do keep in mind that every three or four months the brush has to be replaced.
