Is Boiled Chicken Really Healthy?

Most of us are under the impression that all boiled foods are very healthy. That is why whenever we make a new resolution to eat healthy, we make a beeline grab for boiled chicken. But, is boiled chicken as healthy as we believe it to be? There seems to be a lot of opinions regarding this issue.

Here are some of the main reasons why we consider boiled foods to be healthy without exception.

Boiled Chicken

No oil: As boiled chicken has no oil when compared to the fried stuff, we assume that it is low in calorie and thus healthy.

No spices: Too many strong spices are not good for your stomach. But boiled foods have no spices and thus, they are supposed to be healthy.

Not over-cooked: We assume that boiling is the most primitive form of cooking, so the chicken remains healthy when you boil it. Boiling can never be overcooking for us but it is not true.

Get rid of the fats: When you boil chicken, the fats in chicken float on top of the vessel. While when you fry chicken, it cooks in it own fats. So the assumption is, if you boil it you can easily discard the fats.

Having discussed why we think boiled chicken is healthy, we must also tell you the other side of the story. Some experts also believe that boiling is the worst way to cool chicken. This is what they say:

Boiling drains all the healthy elements from chicken. When the chicken is boiled in excess water you are actually overcooking the chicken. Proteins can get denatured very easily. And when we boil chicken, we are using too much heat to preserve the proteins in chicken. Moreover, boiling also dries the chicken meat and makes it hard.

So if we are not supposed to boil to chicken, then what is next best way to cook it. Actually there are 3 healthy ways to cook chicken.

  1. Steaming: Instead of cooking the chicken in excess water that will drain out the nutrients, you can steam cook the chicken in the microwave.
  2. Poaching: Just like you poach eggs, you can also poach chicken with vegetables and chicken broth.
  3. Broiling: You also cook the chicken in a boiler instead of boiling in a pot of water.
