LPG Shortage? Try These Healthy Meals That Don’t Need Cooking
When major geopolitical tensions unfold in another part of the world, it can be challenging to envision how they might impact everyday life back home. The tensions between Iran and Israel, which are affecting the energy supply routes in the West Asian region, are now affecting the daily lives of Indians due to the increase in the price of LPG and the concern over the availability of cooking gas. This is because India depends on the import of LPG, and the Strait of Hormuz, which is used for the transportation of a large portion of the country's LPG, is affected by the tensions.
While the government has prioritised household LPG supply and asked refiners to increase production, the conflict has already created anxiety about fuel availability and price hikes.
For many families, it raises a simple but important question: What if the gas cylinder runs out or needs to be used sparingly?
The good news is that you don't always need flame to have healthy meals. With some planning, you can have healthy and nutritious meals that don't require any or little fire, especially on days when you need to conserve your LPG supply.
Healthy No-Cook Meals You Can Prepare To Avoid LPG Shortage
1. Protein-Rich Sprouts Chaat
Sprouts are one of the easiest no-cook ingredients that deliver high nutrition.
What you need:
- Sprouted moong or mixed sprouts
- Chopped onion, tomato, cucumber
- Lemon juice
- Roasted cumin powder
- A pinch of black salt
- Fresh coriander
Why it works: This quick chaat is rich in plant protein, fibre, and vitamin C. The lemon also helps improve iron absorption.
2. Peanut & Vegetable Salad Bowl
This simple meal keeps you full for hours and requires zero cooking.
What you need:
- Roasted peanuts
- Grated carrot
- Cucumber slices
- Chopped tomato
- Lemon juice
- A drizzle of mustard oil or olive oil
- Salt and chilli flakes
Why it works: Peanuts add protein and healthy fats, while the vegetables provide hydration and fibre.
3. Curd Rice (Quick Version Without Cooking)
If you already have leftover rice from an earlier meal, this becomes a perfect no-gas dish.
What you need:
- Leftover rice
- Fresh curd
- Salt
- Grated cucumber or carrot
- Optional: roasted peanuts or pomegranate
Why it works: Curd provides probiotics and protein, making this dish soothing for digestion.
4. Overnight Oats or Soaked Poha Bowl
Both oats and poha soften easily without cooking.
What you need:
- Oats or thin poha
- Milk or curd
- Chopped fruits (banana, apple, papaya)
- Nuts and seeds
- Honey (optional)
Why it works: This balanced meal provides carbohydrates, fibre, and protein while keeping energy levels stable.
5. Paneer & Veggie Wrap
A quick, nutritious meal that requires no flame.
What you need:
- Whole wheat roti or tortilla (store-bought)
- Crumbled paneer
- Cucumber, lettuce, onion
- Mint chutney or yogurt dip
Why it works: Paneer provides protein and calcium, while the vegetables add crunch and vitamins.
6. Fruit, Nuts & Yoghurt Power Bowl
Perfect for breakfast or a light dinner.
What you need:
- Greek yoghurt or homemade curd
- Seasonal fruits
- Almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds
- A little honey or dates
Why it works: This bowl is packed with protein, antioxidants, and healthy fats.
7. Chickpea Lemon Salad
If you have canned or pre-boiled chickpeas, this meal takes two minutes.
What you need:
- Boiled or canned chickpeas
- Onion, tomato, cucumber
- Lemon juice
- Chaat masala
- Olive oil
Why it works: Chickpeas provide plant-based protein and fibre, making the salad both filling and nutritious.
Tip to conserve LPG
During uncertain supply periods, plan meals that require minimal cooking, cook in batches, and prioritise dishes that can be eaten cold or assembled quickly.
Bottomline
The geopolitical issues might affect the supply chain but need not affect your nutrition. A well-equipped kitchen with essentials such as sprouts, curd, nuts, fruits, and boiled legumes can help you make healthy meals even when LPG consumption has to be curtailed. Sometimes, the simplest meals, those that don't need a stove at all, turn out to be the healthiest ones.
