They contain chemicals which can do a good job at preventing certain types of cancer. Prevention is better than cure. So, let us discuss everything about eating onions and garlic in an attempt to keep many types of cancers at bay.

Both onion and garlic have antioxidants which can stop the free radicals from damaging the cell DNA. So, they have certain properties that prevent cancer!

Both garlic and onions contain certain compounds that boost enzymes which can disable carcinogenic substances. They help in eliminating carcinogenic substances too. They can also slow down the growth of cancerous substances.

Studies suggest that onions can reduce the risk of colon cancer by 56% and breast cancer by 25%. Garlic is said to be effective in preventing many types of cancers except prostate and breast cancer.

There are so many types of cancers. Out of them, onion and garlic are said to prevent colon cancer, stomach cancer, kidney cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, esophageal cancer, oral cancer, ovarian cancer and liver cancer too.

How to consume onions to reap their benefits? Eat them raw. Chop or minced onions are the best. Their anti-cancer benefits can be reaped if you eat raw onions which are exposed to air for 15 minutes after being cut.

An American study reveals that even eating one single garlic clove per week can reduce the risk of colon cancer by at least 30%! A Chinese study revealed that eating 5 garlic cloves a week can minimise the risk of stomach cancer by nearly 50%! Eating a garlic clove every morning is said to reduce the chances of lung cancer by 44%.

Even garlic is also supposed to be eaten raw. Crush the garlic and allow it to be exposed to air for 10 minutes. Garlic becomes more effective when it is cut and left to the air.

If you have plans to boil or cook onions, don't throw away the water as the compounds present in onions are leeched into the water.

How much to consume? Eat at least half a cup of onions (chopped) on a daily basis. And when it comes to garlic, eat 5 cloves a week. Doing so can help you prevent certain types of cancer.
