Exclusive: Doctor Shares What Links Mental Health And Hormones In Women, And How Mentruation Is Also Connected
Hormones are chemicals that exist in human bodies as part of our endocrine system. It helps to allow cells in various sections of an individual's body to communicate with each other. These hormones directly impact our body function which includes metabolism, growth, sexual health, and reproductive system.
In an exclusive interview with Boldsky, Dr Rinkusen Gupta, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Madhukar Rainbow Children's Hospital, Delhi shares what links mental health and hormones in women.

'There is a complex and deep relationship between women's mental health and hormones as it directly affects women's health and emotional wellbeing. Various changes in hormonal levels occur at different stages in women's lives that can be associated with a variety of conditions, including the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause,' says Dr Gupta.
Menstrual Cycle
It is one of the important phases of a woman's life in which hormonal changes play a central role in the menstrual cycle. Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels have the potential to affect mood, energy levels, and cognitive ability. Women experience symptoms before menstruation, commonly known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which can include mood changes, irritability, and anxiety. These symptoms may be related to hormonal changes that occur in the days before menstruation.
Pregnancy and Mental Health
Pregnancy is another important period of hormonal changes in women. During this time, increases in hormones such as estrogen and progesterone impact mood and contribute to conditions such as prenatal depression. Postpartum depression occurs after childbirth. This is related to hormonal fluctuations as the body adjusts to the sudden drop in pregnancy-related hormones.
Menopause
Menopause marks a significant hormonal change, as estrogen and progesterone levels decline during this time. It may be associated with an increased risk of mental health problems such as depression, and anxiety. It can affect brain function, impact neurotransmitter levels, and play a role in cognitive challenges like memory loss and difficulty in concentration.
Treatment
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is an option for managing symptoms related to hormonal imbalance during menopause. In addition, lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and good sleep hygiene can support hormonal balance and mental health and bring a positive impact.
It is important to understand this deep connection between hormones and mental health in women and carefully support the literary and therapeutic possibilities. Hormone therapy, lifestyle modification, and mental health support can help improve mood, and allow women to cope with these hormonal changes, emotions, and physical health.
