Thiamine-rich Foods To Treat Beriberi
Beriberi is a disease caused by the deficiency of vitamin B1. Vitamin B1 is also known as thiamine. Beriberi can be categorised into three types. It involves the nervous system, the cardiovascular system and the third type that is related to the age of a patient.
Beriberi affects the major functions of the body such as the muscles, heart, nervous system and the digestive system. The symptoms of this disease include weight loss, emotional disturbance, pain in the limbs and an irregular heart rate.
Like mentioned earlier, the treatment for this disease is thiamine alone. Patients must be given foods rich in vitamin B1. This disease is common in under-developed countries, where people are not fed with fortified vitamin-rich foods.
Even though the problem may sound severe, it can be cured by giving the patients certain vitamin B1-rich foods. There are several vitamin-rich foods that are available, which can cure beriberi. In this article, we at Boldsky will be listing out some of the foods that can be used to treat beriberi effectively. Read on to know more about it.

Brown Rice: Brown rice is a good source of vitamin B1. It is highly nutritious and is rich in fibre. Consuming brown rice instead of white rice benefits the patients who suffer from beriberi. Eating two servings of brown rice is advisable.
Almonds: The vitamins and minerals present in almonds keep the body healthy and strong. Almonds are loaded with thiamine. If eaten regularly, the deficiency of vitamin B1 will be recovered in a short period of time.

Sunflower seeds: Sunflower seeds have healing and curative properties. They have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. They also contain thiamine and omega-3 fatty acids that benefit the health of the patients suffering from beriberi. One should eat 1 tablespoonful of sunflower seeds on a regular basis to treat beriberi.
Legumes: Legumes are loaded with proteins, calcium, minerals and thiamine. All these help to restore the health of the bones and muscles that enable the joints to function properly. They also protect the body against certain types of cancers.
Potatoes: Potatoes are packed with nutrients. They are rich in phytochemicals, iron, potassium, copper, vitamin C and vitamin B1. Consuming baked potatoes on a daily basis keeps various diseases at bay, including beriberi.
