Instagram Chats To No Longer Be End-to-End Encrypted: What It Means For Users

Users of Instagram may soon notice a major change in how their private messages work. This follows a confirmation by the parent company, Meta Platforms, that the site will stop supporting end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for its direct messages from May 8, 2026.

This will be a major change for the site's privacy features, considering that the encrypted messaging service was introduced to enhance the privacy and security of users just a few years ago.

What End-to-End Encryption Actually Means

This feature, which is called "end-to-end encryption," has the purpose of ensuring that only the sender and the receiver can read the content of the message. Not even the platform where the chat took place can access it.

With the removal of this feature in Instagram, it means that messages sent through DMs will not be encrypted, and the platform can access the content of the messages if it is necessary.

Why Instagram Is Removing Encrypted Chats

According to Meta, the decision essentially boils down to the fact that the feature simply isn't being used. "We found that very few people used the feature, and it was difficult to justify maintaining it."

The move also comes at a time when there is an increase in pressure from governments across the world for technology companies to step up the monitoring and safety features on social media platforms, especially in terms of detecting harmful and illegal content in messages.

What Happens To Existing Encrypted Chats

Instagram has already started informing users about this change via pop-ups in the app. If you are an Instagram user with encrypted chats:

  • You may be asked to download messages or media you want to keep.
  • After May 8, 2026, encrypted conversations will no longer function.
  • The option to start new encrypted chats will also disappear.

What Meta Suggests Instead

However, for those users who still want to use an encrypted messaging feature, Meta suggests that they shift to WhatsApp, where end-to-end encryption is still a default feature for all messages.

For a long time now, WhatsApp has used end-to-end encryption protocols to ensure that all conversations remain confidential between users.

Why The Decision Is Sparking Debate

The move has sparked a new debate among various privacy groups and technology experts. While some have expressed that this would reduce user privacy, others have stated that this would help the platforms identify harmful behaviour more efficiently.

For users, the move simply means that Instagram chats will not have the same level of privacy as other encrypted messaging platforms.
