BRICS 2026 Summit: Healthy Lifestyle Mission Takes Centre Stage — What It Means For Everyday Indians
The 18th BRICS Summit is being held in New Delhi from September 12 to 13, 2026, bringing together leaders of the expanded BRICS grouping. While the summit has focused on global cooperation, trade, technology and geopolitical concerns, its health agenda has also produced developments relevant to everyday life. The New Delhi Declaration has endorsed initiatives around healthy lifestyles, mental health, traditional medicine and healthcare cooperation.
BRICS Recognises Obesity And NCDs As Major Health Challenges
One of the most relevant developments for the BRICS New Delhi Declaration's recognition of obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as major global public-health challenges. The leaders endorsed the BRICS Mission for Healthy Lifestyle for 2026-2029, along with a compendium of replicable best practices.
The focus is on strengthening cooperation between member countries around healthier lifestyles and tackling health risks associated with NCDs.
For individuals, this reinforces the growing importance of prevention - including healthier eating habits, physical activity and attention to risk factors - although the BRICS initiative is not a prescribed diet or fitness programme for the public.
Mental Wellness Gets A Dedicated BRICS Network
Mental health is another major component of the declaration. BRICS has announced a network of Centres of Excellence for mental health, with NIMHANS in Bengaluru designated as the coordinating Centre of Excellence.
The network is intended to encourage collaborative research, policy dialogue and the sharing of best practices between member countries. The declaration also highlights timely and sustained mental-health and psychosocial support for vulnerable groups, including children and adolescents during crises.
Traditional Medicine Moves Towards Greater Evidence And Cooperation
The summit also backed greater BRICS cooperation in Traditional, Complementary and Integrative Medicine (TCIM). The declaration calls for a BRICS Expert Working Group on TCIM, with an emphasis on evidence-based research, safety, efficacy and knowledge exchange.
This is significant because it places traditional medicine within a framework that stresses research and safety rather than relying solely on traditional claims.
What Does This Mean For Everyday Indians?
The September summit does not introduce a new set of mandatory health rules for Indians. Instead, its significance lies in putting prevention, healthy lifestyles, mental wellness and evidence-based healthcare cooperation firmly on the BRICS agenda.
The message is simple: managing health cannot begin only after illness appears. The emphasis on preventing NCDs, supporting mental well-being and strengthening evidence around healthcare approaches reflects a broader shift towards health promotion and prevention alongside treatment
