Karwa Chauth 2026: Can You Fast While On Medication? A Doctor Explains Who Should Avoid Strict Fasting
For many women, Karwa Chauth is a day of prayers, rituals and fasting for their husbands' well-being. But when the day involves going without food or water from sunrise to moonrise, it can also raise questions for those managing health conditions or taking daily medication. While the fast holds deep emotional and cultural significance, following it without considering individual health needs may pose risks.
Dr. Vamshi V, Consultant in Internal Medicine at Gleneagles AWARE Hospital, Fortis Network, LB Nagar, Hyderabad, explains who should be cautious about strict fasting and why medical advice matters before observing the rituals during Karwa Chauth 2026.
Karwa Chauth 2026: Who Should Avoid Strict Fasting?
Dr Vamshi points out that Karwa Chauth is a deeply revered traditional fast, but observing a strict Nirjala (without food or water) fast can pose serious risks for individuals managing chronic health conditions or taking daily medications.
- Diabetics: Prolonged fasting increases the risk of dangerous hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), while breaking the fast with heavy meals can trigger severe hyperglycemia spikes.
- Hypertensive And Cardiac Patients: Skipping water leads to dehydration, altering blood volume and electrolyte balance, which can trigger blood pressure fluctuations or cardiac stress.
- Patients On Timed Medication: Skipping essential doses or taking drugs on an empty stomach meant to be taken with meals can cause severe gastric erosion, ulcers, or medication toxicity.
- Pregnant And Nursing Women: Adequate nutrition and hydration are vital for both maternal and fetal well-being.
Karwa Chauth 2026: Medical Advice For Observing The Ritual
Dr Vamshi concludes, "Prioritize health without compromising devotion. Consult your internal medicine physician before the fast to adjust medication timing. Modify the fast by incorporating water, coconut water, or fruits, ensuring you honour traditions while keeping your health intact."
Observing the fast on Karwa Chauth 2026 should not come at the cost of one's health. Those with existing medical conditions or prescribed medication schedules should speak to their doctor before deciding how to fast. Making suitable adjustments can help them participate in the occasion while reducing avoidable health risks. Devotion can be personal, and taking care of one's well-being is also an important part of observing the day responsibly.
