Shakira Debuts a New Gaurav Gupta Breastplate, and This Time It's Gold and Banarasi

Shakira's wolf breastplate has a new outfit. At her Madrid residency, which opened on 18 September 2026 to more than 54,000 people on its first night, the singer stepped out in a fresh Gaurav Gupta creation built around his signature moulded bodice, this time cast in gold rather than her now-familiar blue, and paired with a handwoven silk brocade skirt crafted in Banaras, India.

It is the first genuinely new stage look the designer has made for her since the tour opened in Rio de Janeiro back in February 2025, and it lands at a moment when her wardrobe is already doing double duty as news. The same night, she also repeated a red Anamika Khanna look from earlier in the tour, giving the residency's opening show two distinct Indian-designer moments back to back.

What's New About This Look

The breastplate itself keeps Gupta's established construction: a rigid, moulded metal bodice sculpted to Shakira's exact form, carrying his recurring wolf motif. What changes is everything below it. Instead of the pleated blue silk organza of the original Lunar Blue Wolf Gown, this version is built into a mermaid-style skirt of handwoven brocade from Banaras, worked into sweeping loops and exaggerated curves around her legs as she moves. Coverage of the look has described the pairing as a deliberate contrast between the rigid metalwork on top and the fluid, handwoven textile below, with Gupta himself noting that adding the breastplate takes the design somewhere new for him.

The choice of Banarasi brocade is not incidental. It is one of India's most labour-intensive handloom traditions, woven on pit looms with metallic zari threads, and pairing it with cast metal couture puts two very different kinds of Indian craftsmanship on the same global stage in one outfit.

Why It's Landing Differently to the Original

The blue wolf breastplate has been part of Shakira's live show for a year and a half, worn for "Acróstico," the song she wrote for her sons. It has already been explained, photographed and dissected in enough detail that fans could probably describe it from memory. This gold and Banarasi version resets that. It uses the same signature, the same wolf, the same cast-metal logic, but swaps out the fabric story entirely, which is likely why it is being picked up again this week even though the breastplate itself is not a new idea for her.

Stylist Nicolas Bru, who has worked on Shakira's looks throughout the tour, is credited alongside Gupta on this piece.

A breastplate built once can be worn for a year. What Shakira and Gupta have done here is prove it can also be rebuilt, keeping the symbol intact while changing everything it is made from. That is a harder trick than debuting something entirely new, and it is why this gold-and-Banarasi update is getting attention even though the wolf on her chest has not changed at all.
