Nita Ambani’s Amrapali Bharatam Necklace For Ganesh Chaturthi Has An Interesting Connection To Sonam Kapoor
Nita Ambani made a striking statement at the Ambani family's Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 celebrations at Antilia in Mumbai, where guests gathered for darshan of Antilia Cha Raja. She wore a vibrant orange-and-pink silk sari, but it was the enormous, shoulder-to-shoulder necklace across her neckline and upper bodice that became the standout detail of her festive look. Called Amrapali Bharatam, the elaborate piece has an interesting history of its own and fashion followers may recognise it because Sonam Kapoor had worn the same necklace before Nita Ambani.
Nita Ambani's Statement Necklace Was A Work Of Craftsmanship
The Amrapali Bharatam is not a conventional necklace made as one piece from a single design. It brings together antique and vintage jewellery collected from different parts of India and turns them into one elaborate composition. The individual elements retain their distinct forms, giving the piece its unusual, layered appearance.
14 master karigars worked for more than four months to complete the neckpiece. The antique and vintage components themselves were collected over several years, making the process as much about curation and experimentation as jewellery-making.
What Makes The Amrapali Bharatam So Unusual?
Look closely and you can spot jewellery traditions from different regions. A traditional Kerala necklace forms part of the upper structure, while South Indian naths, jhoomars, earrings, billas, chandbalis and passas have been incorporated into the larger design.
Gold jadau, polki, diamonds, coloured gemstones and strings of pearls add further detail. Even the pearl strings at the back serve a practical purpose, helping balance the oversized structure.
The necklace was not simply designed on paper and produced according to a fixed blueprint. Tarang Arora, CEO and Creative Director of Amrapali Jewels, explained that the individual elements had to be physically arranged, adjusted and balanced until they worked together.
But Sonam Kapoor Wore It First
Before Nita Ambani wore the dramatic piece for Ganesh Chaturthi 2026, Sonam Kapoor had already styled the same necklace in November 2025. She paired it with an ivory-and-gold Anarkali, creating a much quieter backdrop for the elaborate jewellery.
That styling made the individual details of the Bharatam easier to notice, from its pearls and gemstones to the different traditional ornaments incorporated into the design.
Nita took a completely different approach. Her vibrant orange-and-fuchsia Kanchipuram silk sari, also paired with additional jewellery and a matching potli, created a much more colourful and maximalist festive look.
One Necklace, Two Very Different Looks
What makes the two appearances interesting is that neither look relies on the necklace in quite the same way. Sonam's ivory ensemble allowed the intricate craftsmanship to take centre stage, while Nita's colourful sari embraced the necklace's dramatic scale.
The Amrapali Bharatam ultimately proves that a statement piece does not have to be styled just one way. Its mix of regional jewellery traditions gives it enough character to stand out against both a restrained ivory ensemble and a vivid festive sari.
