Patta Gobhi Tamatar/Cabbage With Tomato
Cabbage is a green vegetable of spring-summer season. Cabbage has many health benefits and is low in fats & calories. Fresh green seasonal cabbage is a rich source of anti-oxidants namely Vitamin C. It also contains essential minerals like potassium, iron, magnesium and manganese that increases blood cells in the body, controls heart rate and blood pressure.
As it is a seasonal vegetable, you can try various recipes. Cabbage can be used in soups, salads, starters and main course recipes. The spring roll for example is a very popular starter recipe that is stuffed with cabbage. In Indian cuisine, cabbage is known as patta gobhi. Patta gobhi matar or tamatar are very popular side dish in the Indian main course. Patta gobhi matar is a blend of cabbage and green peas whereas, patta gobhi tamatar is a tangy side dish that is prepared with cabbage and tomatoes. It is an easy to prepare side dish. Patta gobhi tamatar (cabbage with tomatoes), side dish recipe:
Serves: 3
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
- Cabbage/patta gobhi- 2 cups (sliced)
- Tomatoes/tamatar- 2 (chopped)
- Green chillies- 3 (chopped)
- Turmeric powder- 1tsp
- Red chilli powder- 1tsp
- Coriander powder- ½ tsp
- Cumin seeds- 1tsp
- Salt- as per taste
- Oil- 2tbsp
Procedure
- Heat oil in a frying pan. Season with cumin seeds.
- When the seeds start to splutter, add the sliced cabbage and cook on a medium flame for 3-4 minutes.
- Sprinkle salt and turmeric powder so that the cabbage cooks faster and essence of turmeric powder comes. Cook for another 4-5 minutes.
- Now add the chopped tomatoes and green chillies. Mix well and cook till the vegetables become tender.
- Once the cabbage and tomatoes look tender, add red chilli powder and coriander powder. Mix well and cook for another 2 minutes. Put the pan off flame.
Patta gobhi tamatar (cabbage with tomatoes) is ready to eat. Serve it hot as a side dish with rotis or dal and rice.
