Chidambaram Kathrikai Curry Recipe
The Tamil curries are the ones to crave for if you are a spice lover. The Tamil cuisine turns the most bland vegetable into the most lip-smacking dish. Today we have one such dish from the Tamil cuisine which is sure to make you drool over your food.
To start with, this vegetarian recipe is prepared with brinjals. This is a special delicacy from the temple town of Chidambaram. It is known as the Chidambaram kathrikai gothu or brinjal curry. It is served as an offering to Lord Nataraja at the Chidambaram temple along with other food items. You may prepare this vegetarian recipe by roasting the brinjals. We have boiled the brinjals in the recipe to make it quick for you.

Cooking time: 20 minutes
Ingredients
- Brinjals- 4
- Baby onions- 1 cup
- Tamarind pulp- ¼ cup
- Red chillies- 4
- Coriander seeds- 2tbsp
- Hing (asafoetida)- a pinch
- Mustard seeds- ½ tsp
- Urad dal- 1tsp
- Black pepper- ½ tsp
- Curry leaves- 7-8
- Salt- as per taste
- Oil- 3tbsp
Procedure
1. Cut the brinjals into halves and pressure cook it with salt. Wait for 2 whistles to blow.
2. Once done, keep the pressure cooker aside.
3. Heat one tablespoon of oil in a pan and add hing, red chillies, coriander seeds to it. Saute for a minute and then switch off the flame.
4. Once the mixture cools down, grind it in a mixer into fine powder and keep it aside.
5. After that take the brinjals out of the cooker and mash them with a spatula.
6. In a pan heat one tablespoon of oil and add the baby onions to it.
7. Fry till the onions turn golden brown and become soft.
8. Then add the tamarind pulp and bring it to boil.
9. Now add the mashed brinjals, the prepared masala powder and salt to it.
10. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on medium flame and then switch off.
11. Now heat one tablespoon of oil in another pan and add mustard seeds, urad dal, black peppercorns, curry leaves and turn off the flame.
12. Add this seasoning to the brinjal curry and serve.
The Chidambaram kathrikai goshtu is ready to be served. Enjoy this delicious vegetarian recipe with rotis or rice.
