Vethu Sambar For Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan is a special festival that celebrates the bond of love between brothers and sisters. And what better way to celebrate this festival for siblings than having the best foods. On Raksha Bandhan, special recipes are prepared by the sisters for their brothers. It is rare for the brothers to return the favour though.
Today, we are making vethu sambar. This is a special recipe shared by our reader Sivaprashanthi for her brother Raakesh.

Vethu sambar is a popular recipe from Tamil Nadu and it tastes even better than the normal sambar. Take a look at how to prepare vethu sambar.
Serves: 3
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
- Toor dal - 100 gm
- Onion - 1 (sliced)
- Tomato - 1 (chopped)
- Green chilli -1 (slit)
- Dry red chilli - 1
- Curry leaves - few
- Tamarind - 5 gm or 1 big gooseberry size
- Garlic - 10 cloves (chopped)
- Asafoetida - 1 pinch
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- Salt- as per taste
- Oil- 2tbsp
- Coriander leaves
Procedure
1. Boil the dal in a pressure cooker with 2 cups of water till it is completely cooked. Wait for 3 whistles.
2. Heat oil in a pan and add dry red chilli, curry leaves, garlic and hing to it. Fry for a minute.
3. Then add the onions and fry till they turn golden brown.
4. After that add the green chillies, tomatoes, turmeric powder, salt and cook for 4-5 minutes.
5. Soak the tamarind ball in water and then add the pulp to the pan.
6. Add in the dal and simmer for 3-4 minutes.
7. Once done, switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.
Vethu sambar is ready to be served. Enjoy this special Tamil recipe with steamed rice.
