Railway Mutton Curry
Wondering about the name of the recipe? Railway mutton curry got its unique name during the British era when travelling by train was considered to be a privilege. This slightly spicy dish was served in the refreshment rooms along with dinner rolls and bread to long distance travellers.
Railway mutton curry is not too spicy, as it was prepared keeping in mind, the delicate British palate. Tamarind juice or vinegar is used in this recipe to increase the shelf life of the curry since in those times it was prepared for the long distance train rides. However you can adjust the quantity of tamarind to suit your taste. This delicious mutton recipe is a must-try.

Ingredients
- Mutton- 500gms (cut into medium size pieces)
- Onions- 2 (sliced)
- Ginger-garlic paste- 1tbsp
- Peppercorns- 6
- Cinnamon- 2
- Cloves- 2
- Green cardamoms- 2
- Curry leaves- 8-10
- Dry red chillies- 3 (broken into bits)
- Tamarind juice- ½ cup or Vinegar- 1tbsp
- Chilli powder- 1tsp
- Turmeric powder- ½ tsp
- Salt- as per taste
- Oil- 2tbsp
- Water- 2 cups
Procedure
- Wash and clean the mutton properly.
- Marinate the mutton with ginger-garlic paste, salt and red chilli powder. Keep it aside for about half an hour.
- After an hour, heat oil in a pan and add peppercorns, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, curry leaves and dry red chillies one by one. Fry for a few seconds.
- Add onions and cook for about 3-4 minutes on medium flame until they turn golden brown.
- Now add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder, salt and cook for 2 minutes on medium flame.
- Pour the tamarind juice or vinegar. Cook for about 3-4 minutes.
- Then add the mutton pieces and mix well.
- Add water and cover the pan. Cook on medium flame for about half an hour.
- Check if the mutton is completely cooked with the help of a fork.
- Once done, switch off the flame and serve.
Serve railway mutton curry with steamed rice or rotis.
