Chicken In Tomato Gravy: A Recipe Without Onions
The price of onions in India is touching new heights everyday. It has become extremely difficult for the common people to use onions lavishly in their food. Onion plays an important part in Indian food. It forms the base for most of the curry items and therefore a difficult item to miss from the Indian recipes.
However you can still prepare some delicious Indian recipes without using onions in any form. Here we bring you one of the most simple and lip-smacking chicken recipes without onions. Chicken in tomato gravy is a quick and easy recipe to prepare. Just marinate the chicken pieces with curd and a mix of spices and then cook it up in a tasty tomato gravy.
So, chicken lovers get ready to try out this finger-licking no-onion recipe of chicken in tomato gravy and enjoy it's divine taste.

Serves: 4-5
Preparation time: 1 hour
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
- Chicken- 1kg (cut into medium sized pieces)
- Yogurt- 1 cup
- Tomatoes- 5 (pureed)
- Ginger-garlic paste- 2tbsp
- Green chillies- 3
- Poppy seeds- 2tbsp
- Turmeric powder- 1tsp
- Black pepper powder- 1tsp
- Cumin powder- 1tsp
- Coriander powder- 1tsp
- Garam masala powder- 1tsp
- Sugar- ½ tsp
- Salt- as per taste
- Lemon juice- 1tbsp
- Oil- 2tbsp
- Water- 1 cup
- Coriander leaves- 2tbsp (chopped, for garnish)
Procedure
- Wash and clean the chicken pieces thoroughly with water.
- Marinate the chicken pieces with lemon juice, yogurt, salt and one tablespoon of ginger-garlic paste for about one hour.
- Grind poppy seeds and green chillies together with about three tablespoon of water into a thick paste in a mixer. Keep it aside.
- After one hour, heat oil in a pan and add one tablespoon of ginger-garlic paste. Fry for a minute on medium flame.
- Add the chicken pieces and saute for about 6-7 minutes on medium flame.
- Add the pureed tomatoes, salt, turmeric powder and cook for about 5 minutes.
- Then add cumin powder, coriander powder, black pepper powder, sugar and the poppy seeds paste. Mix well. Cook for 4-5 minutes.
- Add water and mix well. Cover and cook on low flame for about 20 minutes. Keep stirring at regular intervals.
- Once done, open the lid and check the chicken pieces with a fork.
- Add garam masala and mix well with a spatula.
- Switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves.
Chicken in tomato gravy without onions is ready to be served. Serve hot with steamed rice.
