Knotting a tie will be an alien operation for majority of the people. Many people find themselves in a dilemma when they have to wear a tie for the first time for important occasions like official meetings, interviews, and convocations etc. Though knoting a tie seems to be a challenge to many people, the only thing you need to have is an open mind and a little practice. Here are the major styles in knotting a tie and the tips for doing it well. All you need to do is standing in front of a mirror with your tie and to practice the tips.

Windsor knot is a thick and wide triangular knot worn for formal occasions. It is best suited with spread collar shirts and projects your confidence. Here are the tips for a Windsor knot for your tie:

The narrow end of the tie should be from your left to the right.

The wide end must be from your right to the left and above the narrow end.

The wide end must extend downwards for 12 inches more than the narrow end.

Bring the wide end through the loop between the narrow end and the collar; then back down.

Pull the wide end underneath the narrow end through the loop and towards the right side.

Bring the wide end from left to right above the narrow end.

Again pull up the wide end through the loop.

Bring down the wide end through the knot formed in front.

Carefully tighten the knot with both hands and draw it up to the collar.

A half-Windsor knot gives a little more assertive look. It is a medium triangular knot that can be worn for any occasion and preferably with standard shirt collars. It will work best with somewhat wider ties made from light to medium fabrics. Here are the methods for a half-Windsor knot.

The narrow end of the tie should be from your left to the right.

The wide end must be from your right to the left and above the narrow end.

Bring the wide end from left to right above the narrow end.

Again pull up the wide end through the loop.

Four-in-hand knot is the most popular and classic method for knotting a tie. The knot produced by this method is on the narrow side, slightly asymmetric, and appropriate for all occasions. The wide end must be from your right to the left and below the narrow end.

Take the wide end over and then under the narrow end.

Pull the loop down and tight it.

Take the wide end from your left to the right.

Pull up the wide end behind the loop.

Bring the wide end through the knot formed in front and tighten it gently.

Small knot as the name indicates is small. It is suitable for ties made from thick fabric and for close-fitting collars. Here are the tricks to get a small knot for your tie:

The wide end must be from your right to the left and below the narrow end.

Twist the wide end inside out.

Take the wide end around and over the narrow end.

Pull up the wide end through the loop around your collar.

Bring the wide end through the knot formed in front and tighten it gently.
