There are some beauty companies that claim rice water has anti-ageing properties, but there is little scientific evidence to support such claims.
Is Rice Water Good For The Skin?
It may appear that rice water-infused formulas are a new trend in the beauty aisle, but in fact, it is one of the oldest tricks in the beauty book!
The Asian diet is heavily reliant on rice. It has been used for centuries to hydrate the body in debilitating health conditions as an economical and natural ingredient. Indians consume rice water for its starch content to hydrate the body in debilitating health disorders [2].
As a result of its rich mineral content that promotes healthy skin, Japanese and Korean women have utilised it as part of their skincare regimen for centuries.
Benefits Of Rice Water In Skincare
As rice water contains starch, it is often added to bathwater to reduce inflammation in itchy skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis [3].
Due to the presence of ferulic and phytic acid, rice water can also be used by some experts to reduce blemishes and soothe sunburns [4].
According to some studies published in 2018, rice water can also combat the effects of ageing by hydrating the skin and giving it a smooth, porcelain-like appearance [5].

How To Make Rice Water for Skincare?
The following methods can be used to make rice water:
- Soaking method: Soak 1/2 cup of uncooked rice in 2-3 cups of water for 30 minutes.
- Boiling method: When cooking rice, double the amount of water normally used for it and boil it for a prolonged period of time.
For immediate use, strain the water into a clean bowl or bottle. Store the remainder in a clean container in the refrigerator.
You can make fermented rice water by soaking rice in water and leaving it at room temperature for one to two days before storing it in the refrigerator.
How To Use Rice Water For Skin Care?
Rice water can be used in several ways to care for the skin, including:
- Use rice water to wash your face
- After cleansing, apply rice water as a toner
- Using a spray bottle, spray rice water on the face
- Take a bath in rice water
- Using a cotton ball soaked in rice water, apply the solution to the face
On A Final Note...
There are no known side effects associated with the use of rice water, which is a common household ingredient.
It is, however, advisable to avoid leaving rice water at room temperature for longer than 24 hours as it will alter the nutrient potential and the water will not be as beneficial.
