Thirukural, Right Time
Pakalvellum kukaiyaik kaakkai ikalvellum
Vaendharkku vaendum poludhu.

A crow may over-come a much stronger bird, the owl during day-time,
Even so, at the right opportunity, the king could succeed easily in his campaigns.

It is said that in a nocturnal fight, the own could easily beat the crow. But if the fight takes place during the daytime, the crow will be the victor. There is a story to this effect in the Panchatantra. This fact focuses attention on the time factor of any operation, which is important for a king, contemplating his campaign.

When the Kural speaks of 'Polutu' it is not the time selected from the astrological angle. It means the tactically right time for the campaign or warfare, with due reference to the attendant accompaniments of related advantages. Consideration of time, therefore, is of considerable importance in deciding upon king"s operations.

Valluvar has placed this chapter, on the right time for the proposed operation, immediately following the chapter on the Assessment of Relative Strengths, indicating the importance he attaches to it.
