Also called Kamrup, the Kamakhya Temple is a pagoda which is the oldest of all 51 shakti peethas that was built in honour of Sati or Shakti.

Nilachal provides the magnificent backdrop. Assam is the cradle of black magic hubs and witchcraft practices. Kamakhya temple is associated intrinsically with all the ritualistic practices as she is worshipped for attainment of the tantric siddhis.

When a tantra disciple's sadhana is completed, the guru sends his disciple to Kamakhya to get final blessings from her for his sadhana. This is like certificate course at the end of which you take up an exam and get a certificate. The kamakhya devi gives a final touch to the disciple's tantric achievement.

Legend Of Sati: Firstly, according to a legend, Sati, wife of Shiva, wanted to attend her father Daksha's yaga for which only sati was invited. When sati went there alone, she had to go through a barrage of insults hurled by Daksha on Lord Shiva.

Sati had arrived there against the wishes of Lord Shiva and hence unable to bear the insult, she leapt into te homagni and breathed her last.

Lord Shiva, distraught by his wifes death, carried her body and began the destructive dance. this was stopped by Lord Vishnu, who cut her body into 51 pieces with his chakra.

The body parts fell at certain places where temples for Sati were erected. These came to be known as Shakti Peethas. Kamakhya temple was where the Womb of Sati fell and this place came to be revered for women power and fertility.

Rituals At Kamakhya Temple: The Kamakhya temple, although a hub of tantric practices does not support harmful pujas done to annihilate the enemy. It is resorted to for the removal of black magic. Sadhus and aghoris who live here do these rituals to help people going through the side effects of black magic. This is known to be an abode of dasha mahavidyas or the ten devis.

Pujas are held here to dispel ghosts by taking tantric assistance and the sadhus display their powers to exorcise ghosts during the Ambubachi mela where in thousands of tantrics visit the shrine.

Animal sacrifices are also done.. Kaul tantras first started here at Kamakhya. At the same time, the tantrics also bless people wth children, wealth and spouse etc.

Vashikarana tantra or the art of getting others attracted towards you, is also widely practiced here. This is done when only there is mutual consent by the couple to carry out this ritual.

This is done only to rectify problems in relationships and also to attract wealth. Earliest temple in the kamakhya temple complex was constructed by the Mlechcha dynasty.

Even several Buddhists hail from Assam from the kamarupa belt. They too were influenced by these practices and carried some of them on their own to achieve their ends or to help people.
