Diwali, the 'festival of lights’, is celebrated to commemorate the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile after killing the demonic king Ravana. The most vigorously celebrated festival of India, Diwali sets the entire country sparkling with lights. Every year the festival falls on Amavasya of the Kartika month. The date according to Gregorian calendar falls some time around Mid-October to November. This year it will be observed on 7 November, 2018.

Among the events that take place on this day, Lakshmi Puja is the most significant one. It is said that Goddess Lakshmi was born a day before Diwali, the Dhanteras day. Devi Lakshmi is the consort of Lord Vishnu and is often depicted as seated on a lotus flower, holding a lotus in one hand and showering wealth from the other.
