Diwali, the 'festival of lights’, is celebrated to commemorate the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile after killing the demonic king Ravana. The most vigorously celebrated festival of India, Diwali sets the entire country sparkling with lights. Every year the festival falls on Amavasya of the Kartika month. The date according to Gregorian calendar falls some time around Mid-October to November. This year it will be observed on 7 November, 2018.

Among the events that take place on this day, Lakshmi Puja is the most significant one. It is said that Goddess Lakshmi was born a day before Diwali, the Dhanteras day. Diwali is observed for the celebration of the birth of the Goddess. Here we explore more as to what is the significance of Lakshmi Puja during Diwali.

Devi Lakshmi is the consort of Lord Vishnu and is often depicted as seated on a lotus flower, holding a lotus in one hand and showering wealth from the other. The Goddess has eight forms and is known as Ashtalakshmi. Adorned with beautiful gold ornaments, Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped for prosperity and progress.

The significance of Lakshmi Puja in Diwali is not limited to material gains only but also for the spiritual growth of one’s mind and body. The deity who is a symbol of all worldly and materialistic luxuries is also a symbol of patience and detachment from desires. The lesson here is to aspire for attachment with the supreme being, God.
