Significance Of Wearing Choora
Nothing matches the beauty of an Indian bride. Indian women look their best when they are dressed up in their bridal outfit. The beautiful bridal dress with a lot of jewellery. Of the bridal jewellery, some pieces worn by the bride are of great importance. The Mangalsutra, to start with, is one of the most vital accessories which a bride has to wear. Similarly, there is the choora or the red bangles which a bride wears on her wedding.

A choora is a set of red and white bangles which has to be compulsorily worn by the bride on her wedding. The white bangles may replaced by other colours according to the traditions. But usually the tradition has been to include these two colours.
The tradition of wearing the choora originated in Punjab. It is a tradition usually followed by the Hindus largely. But even Sikhs follow the tradition of wearing choora. Take a look at the rituals of putting on the choora by the bride and the importance of wearing the choora.
Customs Related To The Choora
The choora ceremony is held on the morning of the wedding. The bride's maternal uncle gives her the choora which has a set of 21 bangles in red and white colours. The bride is not allowed to see the choora till she gets fully dressed and sits on her wedding venue with the groom. According to the traditions a bride must wear choora for at least a year. When the colour starts to fade the in-laws must get it re-coloured. However nowadays, the brides usually wear the choora for 40 days after the wedding and then take it off.
Traditionally, after the first anniversary of the couple, the in-laws would arrange for a small ceremony on an auspicious day. Then the choora would be removed and be replaced with glass bangles. Sweets and gifts would be distributed. The choora should be ideally taken off near a river and with a small prayer, it is put into the river water. If the bride gets pregnant before a year, then the choora has to be taken off.
Significance Of The Choora
Wearing the choora signifies the status of a married woman. It is also a sign of fertility and prosperity. It is worn for the well being of the husband. The bride is not allowed to see the choora till the wedding because out of excitement, her own evil eye may bring misfortune. Therefore the bride's eyes are closed when the choora is put on by her relatives.
With the changing times, the customs are being modified according to the needs. But a few traditions are still practiced and will be practiced for the years to come. Wearing the wedding bangles is also one of them.
