It is inferred from the inscriptions here that the temple's renovation from its brick structure to stone commenced around the 10th century. The inscriptions also bear the names of Sembiyan Mahadevi and Parantaka Chola's contribution to the temple. The moat surrounding the temple is said to have been the seven seas that came to witness the divine wedding.
