Shiva Tandav nritya is a dance of death or destruction performed by Lord Shiva that was performed a few times yugas back in time.

It was at this Lord Shiva expressed his grief and anger by dancing the Rudra Tandava. Ravana, the King of Lanka, was a staunch devotee of Shiva who composed a hymn in praise of the Rudra Tandava and presented it Shiva when he prayed to him for granting Moksha to him.

There are seven times Lord Shiva has performed the Tandava. One of the most popular tandava is the Ananda tandava, the dance of bliss that Shiva performed. The other tandavas were performed during different mythological contexts. Shiva is as much a destroyer as he is a saviour.

He is the most merciful and is totally pleased with earnest prayers but shows up his destructive avatar only when it is time for the world to end.The stotram shows Rudra or Shiva in his most valorous, powerful and beautiful form.

With 16 quatrains and 16 alternating long and short syllables, it has gained fame as the most powerful Shiva mantra that was ever heard and composed.

How Did It Originate: Once, as represented in Uttara Kanda, the Lanka King Ravana, was travelling in Pushpak vimana after defeating Kubera. His vimana stopped at a point from which it refused to move. When he asked Nandi what had happened.

Nandi explained that the place was called Kailas and reason why his chariot could not move was because of Shiva's orders not to allow anyone to cross the mountain as Shiva was engaged in a profound conversation with Parvati.

Ravana was very pleased at this and wanted to bring Kailash to his kingdom so that he could stay closer to Shiva. He returned to Lanka and started planning to materialise this decision and discussed this with Narada.

Ravana finally decided to go to Kailash and bring Lord Shiva along with him to Lanka. His arrogance reached the peak when he reached kailash.

He decided to lift the kailas mountain with his hands and take shiva along with kailas to Lanka. He started lifting the mountain using all his might.

Lord Shiva decided to teach a lesson to the haughty ravana. He pressed the mountain with his big toe which actually crushed ravana under the mountain.

Unable to withstand the pain, ravana let out a loud scream and screamed lords hymns and name in devotion asking Shiva to forgive him.

Lord Shiva was impressed and released his toe to free him and gave him many boons. Here are some of the key benefits of the Shiv Tandav Stotram.
