Char Dham Yatra 2023: Saptarishi Kund, The Blue Lake Which Is The Origin Of Yamuna
Saptarishi Kund Trek at an altitude of 4421 meters above the sea level and it is considered as one of the most difficult treks in the Himalayas. This glacial lake is half kilo meter long, dark bluish in colour and the main source of Yamuna River.

Surrounded by rocky glaciers, with its dark bluish waters replenished from Champasar Glacier, this lake, which in itself is a glacial lake of half a kilometer long 4421 m above sea level and has a reputation of being the most difficult trekking stretch in the entire Himalayan ranges.
Very few dare to test their experience on this tough terrain, and only a bunch in thousands attempt this feat. This trek is not for those who are just intending to cross the road and reach the other side, but it is for those who love to challenge themselves on tougher terrains every time to improve their techniques and also for some exhilaration. So the natural beauty of the place remains untouched by Human beings.
This lake is surrounded by awesome rock strewn glaciers, Brahma kamal blooms, and natural slate stones found scattered on the banks. A deeper trek will lead you to those long alpine stretches of Meadows and the Bandar Poonch peak apart from other snow rained peaks.
Legend Behind The Saptarshi Kund
Saptarshi Lake is where all the sapta or seven rishis have performed penance here apart from Atri, Gautama, Viswamitra, Bharadwaj, Vasistha and Jamadagni.. Yamunotri temple is just a walking distance away from here. Hot water springs like Surya Kund are used by pilgrims, as per the rituals, to cook rice and potatoes using the heat in the hot water spring and consume it as prasad.
Points To Ponder
It takes moderate level of expertise to travel through this route through trekking. You should properly train your body and condition it prior to going there.Be ready to brave the sub-zero temperature by wearing proper clothing for this event. You only need strong and sturdy shoes to accompany you to safety. Getting acclimatised to high altitude zones would be an additional advantage. Carry a good camera with good battery back up .
Do not make yourself unnecessarily heavy with loaded backpacks as it is very difficult carry both. Any backpack should be not stuffed with things more than 10 kg of weight. Best time to visit is in May, June, September and October. The highest point here is at 4421 metres of altitude. Nights are colder . The point where you begin the journey is Dehra Dun.
