The Bowl Or The Skull?
A pilgrim proceeded beyond Tibet in a desert in search of a great spiritual master who would show him the truth. The journey was irksome in the thickly blanketed, dark night as he staggered in fatigue and pain, his feet encountering the rough edges of the rocks and the wind dashing against him fiercely, ruffling his hair and beard.
The pilgrim lost all hopes of reaching the destination as extreme thirst threatened his perseverance. He sought refuge in Amida Buddha and faintly made a prayer. As he pulled himself on, his feet struck something that was unfamiliar. As he glanced down, he found it to be a silver bowl with a white snow melting in it. He quenched his thirst out of the bowl and made a prayer of gratitude to Buddha, the light of all lights and drifted to sleep.
In the morning when the lonesome pilgrim opened his eyes, he reached for the silver bowl to drink out of it. To his utter shock and disgust, he found the bowl to be a human skull with bits of flesh still sticking on to it. In its hollow was brain fluid with some maggots swimming in it. Out of utter disgust, the pilgrim vomited. As he did he got the ultimate truth; enlightenment dawned on him! He then turned back and hurried home!
Osho says that if the mind is dropped, one can attain Satori even at home. The seeker got the truth that whatever one perceives depends on the projection of the mind. In the night, when the pilgrim thought that the skull was a silver bowl and the liquid was water, there was no sign of nausea and he in fact had a sound sleep. When the daylight revealed the fact of the bowl being the skull and the water being the fluid with maggots swimming in it, he revolted and vomitted instantly!
He understood that it was all the projection of the mind that plays tricks. Buddha might have really presented a silver bowl with water for him or he might not have. The focus however is not on the bowl or the skull. It is the mind's projection that has to be considered.
Osho thus says, when beliefs which are mere projections of the mind are dropped, all there is, is only the truth.
