Huangbo and another monk on a pilgrimage, came upon a wide stream that was almost river. They planted their staffs on the bank and silently watched the water gush by. Finally Huanbo's companion drew up a little, his robe and started walking on the water , gliding on top of it like a sailboat.

Huangbo detested the idea and muttered, “Had I known that you were like this, I would never have joined you!" He turned around and went his way.
