Bride Viewing: An initiation into marital life?
There may be an intermingled reaction from you as soon as you hear the word "bride viewing". For those who have undergone through that session there may be nice memories as well as memories that they may wish never to repeat even in their nightmares. Even with the advent of latest technologies the function of "bride viewing" remain prominent in Indian societies.
I was quite surprised recently when one of my friends told me about the experience of her cousin. The guy couldn't see the girl in embarrassment of the so-called bride viewing ceremony. However they started calling over the phone and eventually got engaged. The guy got a shock of his life when he really saw the girl on their betrothal day. She was not the one that he had seen or imagined and he landed up on a great trouble to avoid the relationship ending in a marriage ceremony.
The girls have another side of the story to tell. Most of the present day girls detest the idea of the dramatic function where they have to hide their real self and express a traditional outlook. My friends tell that at most instances they are infuriated with their inability to respond to the camouflaged questions regarding dowry. They are driven into total dilemma when the boys reject her telling any simple reasons that they haven't even thought of in life.
The modern society has arranged another dimension to the traditional bride viewing. It is the dating period for the boy and girl with their parents' consent. However even after this involvement many boys are heartbroken when their prospective wives elope with their boyfriends on the eve of wedding. Many girls find it quite irksome when majority of the boys express their true fear for commitment at a final stage of their dating period.
There is no way out of this traditional trap of bride viewing in Indian society unless you have already found a partner for yourself. However there are some effective ways through which you can reduce many heartbreaks in life. Always have a clear picture about the boy and girl's backgrounds, expectations and interests before they meet for the first time. If possible, let them chat or see online since they would have an average idea about the other person's appearance or character. It is always advisable to put a natural appearance during the bride viewing time since; most of the proposals fall into a dark pitch after the mask is lifted.
The prospective couple must talk freely and must decide whether to proceed to a marital relationship. Never foster a rejection fear or a bitter past experience in your mind and see the marriage as an outlet for those problems. However it is always better not to allow anyone into your heart until you tie the knot.
There are many arranged marriages in India that had quite successful relationship succeeding the traditional bride viewing. Always remember that in arranged marriages, the bride viewing time and the following few days are of utmost importance for your coming marital life. Even if you are rejected or rejecting during the bride viewing, keep your dignity and give the other person their space for opinion. Take the bride viewing ceremony as any other meeting to find the correct partner for your lifetime.
