Induced labour pain can be a cause of concern for many couples. There might be many questions in your mind. For example, does induced labour pain have side effects? Labour pain can be induced by natural methods or chemical ones. But when we say induced labour pain, we mean the chemical process. The chemically induced labour pain procedure is being actively used these days. But sometimes, it is the last resort to ensure a natural vaginal birth and thus avoid c-section delivery.
The induction of labour pain usually happens by injecting a medicine into the intravenous system. If you have any allergies, then induced labour pain can have some side effects for you. The doctor has to explain to you, why he or she thinks that inducing labour pain is a good idea in your case. However, induced labour pain relief is not easy. It is not that you cannot have epidural if labour pain has been induced.
Here are some facts about induced labour pain that you need to be aware of before you go for it:
Are You Overdue?
If you are over 40 or 42 weeks pregnant, then your doctor might want to induce labour pain, lest your baby passes stools inside the amniotic sac.
Non Progression Of Labour
You are in labour for more than 12 hours and you have not dilated more than 2-3 cms. This means that your cervix is not opening up although you are having contractions. This means you need some help.
You Have Low Lying Placenta
Sometimes, low lying placenta makes it a risk for you to carry the baby for more than 38 weeks. In that case, induction of labour pain might be an option.
Have Your Waters Burst?
Ideally, you should go into labour within a few hours of your water being burst. But if this does not happen, then you might have to be induced.
You Have Diabetes Or Hypertension?
When the pregnancy is a complicated one, then the doctors do not like to wait for more than 38 weeks for delivering the baby.
Do You Have Any Infection?
If you have any infection, then you might have to deliver the baby immediately. In that case, induction of labour pain may be an option instead of having a c-section.
What method of labour induction is being used?
The safest way to induce labour pain is to give you the hormone prostaglandin vaginally. Membrane sweeps or internal examinations may still be necessary. But breaking of waters artificially is not permitted any more.
Pain Relief
Induced labour pain is not worse than natural labour pain. It is just more sudden and may not be as well co-ordinated as natural labour. You can still opt for an epidural for pain relief.
