Getting Your Tubes Tied: Pros & Cons
Getting your tubes tied is a casual language used by most women to refer to the process of tubal ligation. It is an almost permanent process of contraception that is used commonly by women. Like all other procedures, getting your tubes tied comes with its pros and cons. If you are wondering what kind of contraceptive method to choose, then maybe you would want to know about this process in detail.
Getting your tubed tied after birth of your first or second child is a good option. Needless to say that this is not a contraceptive method that teenagers can try. This is a method for grown up women and that is why, you should ideally consider it only after you have had at least one child.
Here are some of the pros and cons of getting your tubes tied.

Pros:
- It's Permanent
Tubal ligation is a permanent method of contraception. Your tubes are looped or a probe is inserted into them non-surgically to snuff them out. So you never have to bother with contraception again. - It Is Painless
The new non surgical ligation is supposed to be an almost painless procedure. A probe is inserted into the tubes and it grows scar tissues that blocks the passage of the eggs to the uterus. - It's Effective
There is very little risk of you getting pregnant after getting your tubes tied. The odds are that every 1 in 500 women has a failed tubectomy, - You Can Do Right After Child Birth
It is very common of women to get their tubes tied when they are having a C-Section delivery. Even if you have a normal delivery, you can get a ligation done within 48 hours. You can continue to breastfeed while you recover from the surgery and child birth together.
Cons
- It's Irreversible
Do not count on getting your tubes opened again for a normal pregnancy. The reversal process is difficult and not alway successful. - Hormonal Problems
Many women have hormonal problems after they get their tubes tied. It cuts your progesterone levels by almost half which can lead to weight gain and menopause like symptoms. Their is lot of debate on whether or not getting your tubes tied causes an early menopause. - Risk Of Cancer
Any kind of scar tissue increases your risk of developing cancer. And in tubal ligation, you are depending on scar tissue to make you infertile. - No Guarantee Of Safe Sex
Now, just because you do not have to use contraceptives, doesn't mean you get protection against STDs like HIV.
In most cases, it is best to avoid getting your tubes tied after you have had 2 children and are over 30 years of age. Having this procedure at an young age can cause many difficulties both physical and emotional.
