P Chidambaram Says Operation Blue Star Was A Mistake, Indira Gandhi Paid With Her Life

P Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader, recently reflected on the 1984 Operation Blue Star, describing it as an incorrect approach to reclaim the Golden Temple in Punjab. He emphasised that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ultimately paid with her life for this decision. Chidambaram made these remarks during a literature event in Kasauli.

The operation, which took place from June 1 to June 8, 1984, was aimed at removing separatist leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers from the Golden Temple complex. The assault involved tanks and heavy artillery, resulting in numerous casualties among militants, soldiers, and civilians. This deeply affected the Sikh community and led to widespread outrage.

Operation Blue Star's Impact

Chidambaram clarified that the decision to launch Operation Blue Star was not solely Indira Gandhi's but a collective one involving the Army, police, intelligence agencies, and civil service. "You cannot blame it only on Mrs Gandhi," he stated. The operation's aftermath was severe; on October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards as retaliation for the attack.

The fallout from Operation Blue Star triggered anti-Sikh riots across India. The operation's execution left a lasting impact on the nation and its communities. Chidambaram noted that a few years later, they demonstrated a better way to handle such situations without involving the Army.

Current Issues in Punjab

Discussing present-day Punjab, Chidambaram observed that calls for Khalistan have significantly diminished. However, he pointed out that economic distress has become the state's primary concern. "Most illegal migrants are from Punjab," he mentioned during his visits to the region.

The operation's legacy continues to influence political discourse in India. While reflecting on past decisions is crucial for learning lessons, addressing current challenges remains equally important for progress. Economic issues now overshadow separatist sentiments in Punjab.
