A recent study has shown that smokers living with HIV who consistenly take antiretroviral medications will be more likely to die of lung cancer than AIDS.
The researchers point out that the number one killer of people with HIV, is actually not the virus, but smoking itself.
The antiviral medicines are helping people with HIV to live longer, but they are dying from cancer at rates higher than that of the normal population.
The research found out that people with HIV who continued smoking were 6 to 13 times more likley to die from lung cancer than due to AIDS-related causes.
It also suggested men and women with HIV who quit smoking would have their risk of dying from lung cancer considerably reduced.
