Who Is Kapil Dinkar? The Meerut Constable Who Wowed Samay Raina's Panel
Kapil Dinkar walked onto the India's Got Latent stage and immediately threw the room off balance. "Phir se shuru kar diya ye? Pichli baar chain nahi pada band karwa ke?" he said, as Samay Raina paused to ask if he was actually a serving police officer or just dressed like one. He was serving, alright - and he'd come to sing.
That single moment set the tone for what became one of Season 2's most talked-about segments, and turned Kapil Dinkar, a constable with the Uttar Pradesh Police, into an unlikely reality television favourite.
Who Is Kapil Dinkar?
Kapil Dinkar joined the Uttar Pradesh Police in 2021 and is currently posted in Meerut. On stage, he spoke about the pull between duty and passion, revealing that joining the police was his mother's dream, one he's proud to have fulfilled, even as singing remained his own lifelong love. As he put it on the show, translated loosely: he's the only one in his department with permission to keep making music.
Singing isn't his only side pursuit. He has written three books already and is currently working on eight more - a fairly serious literary output for someone holding down a full-time policing job. He also used his time on stage to talk about the UP government's Mission Shakti Kendra initiative, a programme focused on women's safety and empowerment, calling it effective work.
Inside His Winning Performance
The segment ran on banter as much as music. When Samay asked if he ever felt afraid of crime in Uttar Pradesh, Kapil answered confidently that the police had been given plenty of freedom and were putting it to good use. Haarsh Limbachiyaa needled him further, joking that Kapil would be the one showing up to arrest them if they ever broke the law - Kapil didn't miss a beat, asking why they'd bother committing a crime at all.
By the end of it, the panel - Samay Raina, Kiku Sharda, Chandan Prabhakar, Haarsh Limbachiyaa and Balraj Singh Ghai - gave him a unanimous 10 out of 10. Kapil, without missing a beat, scored himself the same. Even the celebration had a punchline: when the party popper meant to mark his win failed to go off, Samay joked that they couldn't exactly set off an explosion in front of the police.
Kapil walked away with the show's Rs 1 lakh prize for his performance. He also answered a bonus question correctly on the side, adding a little extra to his winnings, but it's the Rs 1 lakh main prize that has become the headline detail of his appearance.
The Cop With Bollywood Ambitions
Dinkar's musical ambitions stretch well beyond the show. He has spoken about wanting to collaborate with rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh and has paid tribute to the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala through several performances shared on social media. He has also revealed, during a podcast appearance, that he was once approached to audition for Akshay Kumar's game show Wheel of Fortune, though the audition didn't lead to a selection.
Since the episode went live, the reaction online has leaned warm rather than sceptical. Much of the appreciation has centred on Dinkar holding onto his creative identity despite the demands of policing, with viewers describing his appearance as a reminder that officers have lives, talents and dreams outside the uniform. When the show's official page posted his clip captioned "He had a song for everything," Dinkar replied with characteristic wit, joking about the irony of the police finally showing up on time.
