London: The top position in a poll for Britain's favourite toy has been 'blocked" by Lego - almost 50 years after it was introduced to the UK markets.

The poll, conducted by catalogue store Argos to celebrate its 35th birthday, took into account the top toys since 1973 and named the Danish bricks as the most favourite toy in the country.
Argos interviewed more than 1,000 people aged 16 and above from around the country in its poll on the nation's favourite toy.

Thought a total of 56pct respondents rated Lego as their childhood favourite, it was Scalextric that they always longed for but never got.

One fourth of men in the poll revealed that they wanted to experience the thrill of racing cars around the famous Scalextric track, but never got to possess one for their own.

However, it was Lego's unisex appeal that seems to have helped the toy to conquer the top spot beating more gender specific toys such as Barbie, Sylvanian Families and He-Man.

These half-a-century old plastic bricks have acquired something of a cult following, what with over 500 Facebook groups dedicated to them. In fact, one such large group, called 'I don't care how old I am, Lego is the best!' has 4,396 members on the social networking website.

"The poll proves that Lego is a high quality toy that keeps being interesting to children and adults because of its creative possibilities. It's so simple but has so much potential," The Telegraph quoted a spokesman for Lego, as saying.

While the miniature building blocks appear to be a timeless favourite, there are other toys among this year's favourites, like the Lego Star Wars V19 set and the iconic Rubik's Cube, making it to the Argos" Top 10.

Some of the toys are rather more high-tech, including A waterproof digital camera, a light and sound gadget watch, digital makeover system and electronic touch-and-talk reading device "A key toy trend for winter 2008 is high-tech, with the strong emergence of electronic and gaming toys. But there is also a revitalisation of classics like Lego and Rubik's Cube, and with kids growing up fast these traditional classics will always be important in offering parents a balance of traditional and modern toys for their children," said Ian Chaplin, toys trading manager for Argos.

The top ten toys for 2008 are expected to be:
