Naturally, the internet jumped straight to the price. But once you look beyond the headlines, the Miyazaki mango turns out to be one of the most unusual fruits in the world not just because of how much it can cost, but because of the way it is grown, marketed and almost treated like a luxury item in Japan.

Who Is The Odisha Farmer?

The farmer at the centre of the recent buzz is Deba Padhiami from Tamasa village in Odisha's Malkangiri district. According to reports, he cultivated the Miyazaki mango variety in his orchard and quickly became the subject of local curiosity.

This is not the first time Odisha has made news for the fruit. In 2023, Rakshyakar Bhoi from Kalahandi district also reportedly grew the same variety.

Deba Padhiami's story grabbed even more attention after reports claimed he began guarding the tree at night because he feared the mangoes could be stolen after their reported value went viral online.

What Exactly Is A Miyazaki Mango?

The Miyazaki mango comes from Japan's Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu Island and is a premium variety of the Irwin mango. In Japan, it is popularly called "Taiyo no Tamago," or "Eggs of the Sun."

And visually, it does not look like the mangoes most Indians are used to buying. The fruit usually has bright red to purplish-red skin, an oval egg-like shape and a smooth polished appearance. A single mango can weigh between 350 and 550 grams.

The colour develops because of intense sunlight exposure during cultivation. Some Japanese growers even use reflective techniques to maximise sunlight and achieve the fruit's signature deep red shade.

Why Is Miyazaki Mango So Expensive?

Miyazaki mangoes are considered luxury collectibles in Japan. They are often sold in premium fruit auctions and gift markets where presentation matters almost as much as taste.

The extremely high prices are tied to:

  • Perfect fruit grading
  • Export-quality certification
  • Controlled cultivation
  • Luxury branding
  • Premium packaging
  • Limited production

That is why reports mentioning prices between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹3 lakh per kilogram usually refer to top-grade Japanese auction fruit - not ordinary retail sales.

This is also why experts say simply growing the mango in India does not automatically guarantee massive profits.

What Does Miyazaki Mango Taste Like?

The mango as extremely sweet, juicy and slightly floral in flavour, with very low fibre content. Some reports say the sugar content can cross 15 per cent.

It is also said to contain beta-carotene, antioxidants and folic acid, along with the natural vitamins commonly found in mangoes.

That said, some fruit growers believe the mango's global fame comes as much from rarity and presentation as from taste itself.

How Is Miyazaki Mango Grown?

One reason the fruit has developed luxury status is the amount of work involved in growing it. Japanese farmers reportedly hand-pollinate flowers, monitor fruits individually and use protective nets to catch naturally ripened mangoes when they fall from the tree.

Temperature, humidity and sunlight exposure are carefully controlled throughout the process.

Can Miyazaki Mango Grow In India?

Yes, but successfully growing authentic Miyazaki mangoes outside Japan is considered difficult. Farmers in Odisha, Bihar, Karnataka and West Bengal have experimented with the variety in recent years.

Experts say the fruit depends heavily on:

  • Warm temperatures
  • Balanced humidity
  • Strong sunlight
  • Soil quality
  • Precision farming methods

Indian interest in the mango has grown because of social media attention, luxury farming trends, nursery promotion and curiosity around exotic crops.

Experts Have Also Warned About The Hype

Agricultural experts say many viral claims surrounding Miyazaki mangoes can be misleading. Some specialists have warned that many plants sold as "Miyazaki" in India may not even be genuine.

The Miyazaki mango has become famous because it sounds almost unbelievable - a single mango variety linked to luxury auctions and lakh-rupee price tags. But the real story is less about one expensive fruit and more about how farming is changing.

Indian farmers are experimenting with niche crops, testing premium markets and trying to find opportunities beyond traditional farming. Whether the Miyazaki mango eventually becomes a serious luxury crop in India remains uncertain, but for now, it has already managed to do one thing very successfully, get people talking about farming in a completely different way.
