The Viral Empire State Building Proposal: Who Is the Russian Couple Arrested for Scaling the NYC Tower?
A marriage proposal more than 1,400 feet above Manhattan has turned into one of the most talked-about stories of the summer, and landed the couple behind it in handcuffs.
What happened
On Wednesday, July 1, 2026, two figures dressed head-to-toe in black, faces covered by masks, appeared clinging to the antenna atop the Empire State Building - roughly 1,454 feet (443 meters) above the street. News helicopters caught the moment live: the pair unfurled a banner reading "When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace," before one got down on one knee. Moments later, they were seen embracing and kissing at the top of one of the world's most iconic skyscrapers.
The stunt shut down surrounding streets as police scrambled to respond. According to reporting citing law enforcement sources, the couple reached the spire by slipping through a maintenance hatch on the building's 103rd floor - a restricted area not accessible to the public, normally used for water tower upkeep. From there, they climbed the building's latticework to the antenna itself, with no ropes, harnesses, or safety nets.
They spent close to half an hour at the summit before the NYPD's Emergency Service Unit brought them down safely.
Who are the climbers?
The pair have been identified by police under their legal names, Angelina Nikolau (33) and Ivan Kuznetsov (32) - though they're better known publicly as Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, self-styled "rooftoppers" who've built a large social media following documenting unauthorised climbs of skyscrapers, bridges, and cranes around the world.
The Russian couple were the subjects of the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, which followed their relationship alongside their climbs of structures like Tianjin's Goldin Finance 117 and Kuala Lumpur's Merdeka 118 - often gaining access by posing as construction workers.
Angela's father, Dmitriy Nikolau, a Russian circus performer, told reporters he'd known about his daughter's plans in advance and defended the climb as something he considers a normal activity in any country.
The charges
The two now face a lengthy list of charges, including burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, possession of burglar's tools, criminal tampering, criminal trespass, and disorderly conduct. Police body camera footage circulating online shows officers greeting the pair at the top with a blunt reminder that they weren't allowed to be there.
Investigators are still working out exactly how the couple bypassed building security to reach the restricted maintenance hatch, and what interactions, if any, they had with staff along the way.
There's an added safety wrinkle beyond the obvious fall risk: the Empire State Building's spire functions as a working transmission tower for radio and TV broadcasts, meaning anyone up there is also exposed to significant radio-frequency and electrical energy.
How the building responded
The Empire State Building's management called the incident "unauthorised" and emphasised that tenants, visitors, and observation deck guests were never in danger. In a cheekier follow-up, the building's own social media account leaned into the moment, pointing out that it already offers a legitimate (and considerably safer) $1,000 "Happily Ever Empire" proposal package for couples who'd rather not risk a burglary charge to get engaged.
It's not the first time someone has scaled the building's upper reaches without permission - a photographer was arrested in 2024 after a similar unauthorised climb to the spire, and actor Jared Leto was given official clearance to ascend to the antenna's base back in 2023 to promote a tour.
The internet's verdict
Reaction online has been split. Plenty of people called it one of the most spectacular engagements ever caught on camera; others pointed out the obvious - that an unroped climb up an active broadcast antenna, filmed by news helicopters and requiring an emergency police response, isn't exactly a template anyone should be following for their own proposal.
Either way, Nikolau and Kuznetsov are now engaged, and facing a New York City courtroom instead of just a viral moment.
