These included a desire to reveal valuable and entertaining content to others; to define themselves; to grow and nourish relationships and to get the word out about brands and causes they like or support.
Due to this, social media has become a tool to impact society and not merely a handy tool to stay in touch with society. Today social media is used in numerous ways to shape politics, culture, politics, innovation, careers and more.

1. According to a report by the Business Research Company, the global social media market grew from $193.52 billion in 2022 to $231.1 billion in 2023 at a compound annual growth of 19.4%.
2. About 4.9 billion people use social media across the globe in 2023, mentions Forbes and the number is expected to jump to approximately 5.85 billion users by 2027.
3. Facebook is the world's most used social media platform in the world, with 2.9 million monthly active users across the globe and the most common way people access social media is through a mobile device.
4. In 2022, the average daily social media usage of internet users worldwide amounted to 147 minutes per day, which is up from 145 minutes in the previous year, as per a report by Statistica.
5. In 2020, the Philippines is the nation with the most time spent on social media per day where the online users spend an average of 3 hours and 53 minutes on social media each day. In the US, the daily time spent on social media was just 2 hours and 3 mins.
6. According to the latest social media usage statistics by country, urban consumers in Nigeria spend the most amount of time on social media in 2023. At 238 minutes (three hours and 58 minutes) per day, that's a lead of three minutes over Ghana in second place with 235 minutes, mentions a report by Oberlo.
7. Short-form videos are the most engaging type of content on social media platforms.
8. In 2023, YouTube has over 2.68 billion monthly active users. 52% of internet users worldwide access YouTube at least once a month. Also, about 84% of people aged between 18 to 29 use at least one social media platform.
9. According to Global Statistics, 5 most popular social media platforms in India in 2023 are WhatsApp (531.46 million active users), followed by Instagram (516.92 million users), Facebook (492.70 million users), Telegram (384.06 million users), Facebook Messenger (343.92 million users).
10. Instagram is the most used social media platform in 2023 with 74.70% of the internet users enrolled. The number of active Instagram users in India comes to 516.92 million.
