Old Designs Of Jewellery Is Trend Of the Present

By Suparna Chakaraborthy

The mordern art, abstract designs of jwelery and use of symbolic art are in reality not the discovery of the present generation. These were also practiced in the older times.

A group of archaeologists have found evidence of this in the Spanish caves once occupied by Neanderthals. They have unearthed punctured scallop shells crusted with mineral pigments, which was actually Neanderthal jewellery.

Beautifully painted in reds and yellows, were worn as pendants and was the identification of the owner. “It"s like putting on your Yankees cap when you go to the stadium so people know who you are," Zilhao, the archeologist said.

These ornaments however seem to be acquired by the Neanderthal camps from the Cro-Magnon neighbours. The ornaments date back to 50,000 years ago, 10,000 years before the first modern humans arrived.

Thus the credit for this goes to the artistry of the inhabitants of that age. The home decor of those times were very much similar to what we practice now. The changes came about with the evolution of man, but as it is said, history repeats itself and now we are following the age old designs again.
