Hurun India Rich List 2026: Who Are India's 10 Richest And How Much Are They Worth?
The M3M Hurun India Rich List 2026, released on 23 September, has a familiar name back on top. Gautam Adani and family have reclaimed the position of India's richest with wealth of Rs 9.23 lakh crore. They overtook Mukesh Ambani and family, whose fortune fell 10% to Rs 8.63 lakh crore. One clarification matters: the list ranks net worth, not annual earnings or income.
India's 10 richest people in 2026
- Gautam Adani and family: Rs 9.23 lakh crore, up 13% (about $96 billion)
- Mukesh Ambani and family: Rs 8.63 lakh crore, down 10% (about $90 billion)
- LN Mittal and family: Rs 3.39 lakh crore, up 93%
- Cyrus S Poonawalla and family: Rs 3.03 lakh crore
- Roshni Nadar Malhotra and family: Rs 2.79 lakh crore
- Kumar Mangalam Birla and family: Rs 2.69 lakh crore
- Dilip Shanghvi: Rs 2.65 lakh crore
- Azim Premji and family: Rs 2.63 lakh crore
- Anil Agarwal and family: Rs 2.08 lakh crore, up 87%
- Samir Mehta and family: Rs 1.89 lakh crore, up 52%
How Adani took the top spot back
Adani now leads Ambani by Rs 59,400 crore. The swing reverses last year's list, when Ambani topped the ranking at Rs 9.55 lakh crore and Adani stood at Rs 8.15 lakh crore.
The biggest movers
LN Mittal and family of ArcelorMittal jumped eight places to third. Their wealth rose by Rs 1.64 lakh crore, the largest absolute gain on the list, which Hurun linked to Europe's steel trade protection and firmer regional steel prices.
Anil Agarwal and family entered the top ten at ninth, while Samir Mehta and family of Torrent Pharmaceuticals joined at tenth after the JB Chemicals merger was completed. Roshni Nadar Malhotra remains India's wealthiest woman.
The bigger picture
India now has a record 391 dollar billionaires, up from 237 five years ago, after adding 27 in the past year. The list carries 1,810 individuals worth at least Rs 1,000 crore, with combined wealth of Rs 187.5 lakh crore, roughly half of India's GDP.
That wealth grew 12.8% even as the Nifty 50 fell 3.9% and the Sensex dropped 5.8%. Hurun notes that much of it sits in ownership stakes in businesses, whose value can move independently of the market. The top ten's combined wealth has grown 7.17 times since 2012, from Rs 5.44 lakh crore to Rs 39.01 lakh crore.
Currency plays a part too. Anas Rahman Junaid, Founder and Chief Researcher at Hurun India, said the rupee is "a rather strict bouncer at the billionaire club". At the 2014 exchange rate, the list would have 559 billionaires.
Bottomline
The 2026 list shows a top tier that is broadening. The two biggest fortunes no longer outweigh the eight behind them, and steel, pharma, metals and technology are all represented in the top ten. Wealth rankings shift with valuations, so this order can change quickly.
