August 2026 Bank Holidays: Full State-Wise List Before You Plan Your Visit
A home loan disbursal on a Friday. A cheque that needs to clear before month-end. A branch visit that keeps getting pushed to "tomorrow." Then tomorrow turns out to be a bank holiday nobody checked for. August is one of the busiest months on the Indian holiday calendar, and this year it lines up in a way that could catch plenty of people off guard - Independence Day falls on a Saturday, Raksha Bandhan falls on a Friday, and both create long weekends worth planning around.
Bank branches in India close for national holidays, state-specific festivals, and the second and fourth Saturday of every month - on top of every Sunday. Digital services like UPI, IMPS, net banking and ATMs keep working through all of it, but anything that needs a physical branch, from cheque deposits to loan paperwork, has to work around these dates.
The Full List Of August 2026 Bank Holidays
Here is how the month breaks down, based on the Reserve Bank of India's holiday framework under the Negotiable Instruments Act:
- August 2 (Sunday) - closed nationwide
- August 8 (Saturday) - second Saturday, closed nationwide
- August 9 (Sunday) - closed nationwide
- August 15 (Saturday) - Independence Day, closed nationwide; also observed as Parsi New Year in Mumbai and Nagpur
- August 16 (Sunday) - closed nationwide
- August 22 (Saturday) - fourth Saturday, closed nationwide
- August 23 (Sunday) - closed nationwide
- August 26 (Wednesday) - Onam in Kerala; Id-e-Milad (Milad-un-Nabi) observed in several northern and central states
- August 28 (Friday) - Raksha Bandhan, observed in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, among other states
- August 30 (Sunday) - closed nationwide
Add these up and banks in some states could see close to ten closure days this month, once weekends and regional festivals are combined.
Why This Month Needs Extra Planning
Two things make August 2026 worth marking on the calendar early. First, Independence Day landing on a Saturday means it doesn't eat into a weekday the way it would in other years - but it also means anyone who assumed Saturday banking was available for a quick errand will be caught out. Second, Raksha Bandhan falling on a Friday creates a three-day stretch, Friday through Sunday, in states where it's observed as an official holiday. For anyone in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan or Gujarat with a time-sensitive transaction due that week, moving it earlier is the safer bet.
Regional holidays add another layer. Onam closures apply only in Kerala, while Milad-un-Nabi observance varies by state, so a branch in Delhi may be open on a day when one in Lucknow is shut. The RBI does not issue a single uniform list for the whole country - it notifies holidays region by region, which is exactly why the same date can mean different things depending on where an account is held.
What Still Works When The Branch Is Closed
None of this affects digital banking. UPI transfers, IMPS, net banking, mobile apps and ATM withdrawals continue as normal through every date on this list. The closures apply strictly to in-branch services - cheque clearances, passbook updates, demand draft issuance, and anything that needs a signature across a counter. If a transaction genuinely needs a branch visit, that's the piece to plan around, not the digital half of banking.
